'Rents weekend planned

This evening the parents of about 250 students will arrive in Hanover for Sophomore Parents' Weekend. Among the activities scheduled are a hypnotist, a barbecue, faculty and Career Services lectures, and, for the early risers, morning language drill classes.

According to Hosea Harvey '95, an organizer of the weekend, 400 to 500 individuals are expected.

After registering in the Thayer Dining Hall lounge, parents are invited to Jazz Night at Alumni Hall, a reception at which Neisha Powells '95 will sing and Luis Scheker '95 will play the piano.

Parents are advised to get a good night's sleep on Friday night so they will be alert enough to answer their language drill instructor at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Tara Gulla '95 said drill will be offered in German, Japanese, Italian, French and Spanish.

For those itching to exercise, Sigma Delta sorority, Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity and the Co-ed Fraternity Sorority Council will sponsor a Family Fun Run/Walk on Saturday. Katie Davis '95, Todd Seneker '95 and Susan LoCurto '95 are organizing the event to benefit The Family Place, a center for family educational and counseling services, in White River Junction, Vt. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. on the Green and the run, which starts at 8:45 a.m., will end at the Connecticut River. Bagels will be available and prizes from local restaurants and businesses will be awarded, Davis said.

Later in the morning, two sets of seminars with professors and Career Services personnel will be offered. At noon, parents and students are invited to a barbecue on Tuck Drive. Tickets will be available at registration for $5.

At 2 p.m. several special interest and CFSC houses will sponsor the Summerphonics and serve dessert on Tuck Drive.

Dean of the Faculty James Wright and Assistant Dean of Students Julie Wright will speak to parents at 4 p.m. on the topic of how a student can coordinate a major with prospective careers. "This was one of the most successful events last year," Harvey said.

The Class will sponsor a hypnotist at 8 p.m. in Webster Hall. Unfortunately for students, priority will be given to parents for admission to this event.

For parents not exhausted by the day's activities, Asgard will sponsor a coffee house from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Hyphen. According to Thomas Marlowe '95, organizer of the event, performers will include Brian Eyster '95, Judd Caswell '94 and Justin Wells '95 among others.

On Sunday, campus tours will be available. From 8-10 a.m., the Ledyard Canoe Club welcomes parents and students to the river for a Pancake Paddle. The canoe rental fee is $5 per hour and breakfast is $3, Will Sweetser '92 said.

Parents' Weekend is entirely run by members of the sophomore class. Harvey, Tim Gardner '95 and Lori Shyavitz '95 are the main organizers of the event, which is one of the most lucrative fundraisers for Class Council.

All of the money raised will finance future class events, Harvey said.

Six hundred parents paid to take part in last year's Parents' Weekend.
