Although students are still not allowed to eat there, Home Plate will open periodically this summer to accommodate the camps at the College.
"This is done to keep the campers from spilling over into the Food Court area which is for the students," Dartmouth Dining Services Director Pete Napolitano said.
With the influx of eaters that results from the variety of camps that the College hosts, more space is needed. In addition to the fact that there are more people to feed, often these groups choose to dine at the same times even though they are encouraged to eat at off hours.
Since most campers are only allowed to eat in Full Fare, this causes an overflow of people and makes it impossible for DDS to accommodate all of the campers in that one area. By opening Homeplate, the College is able to provide ample facilities and seating.
One of two things occurs when Homplate is open. Sometimes, the Full Fare serving line is open and campers have the option of sitting in the Full Fare or Homeplate area. Other times both the Full Fare and Homeplate serving lines and seating areas are open. Both serving lines serve the same menu.
The Homeplate area is only open when there is a definite need and then, is open exclusively to the groupsthat are instructed to eat there.
