Fate of ROTC uncertain

A handful of students plastered the campus with approximately 100 posters attacking President Bill Clinton's "Don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue" decision and calling for the elimination of the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the College.

The signs went up Monday night and Tuesday morning in response to Clinton's new policy on gays in the military.

Under the new plan, applicants to the armed forces will not be asked about their sexual preferences. Effectively, the policy will allow gays to serve in the military provided they refrain from homosexual conduct. But, critics say the change is so slight that it really is no change at all.

"We put the signs up to express our outrage at the President's 'new' policy and to hopefully draw attention to the fact that Dartmouth College is still obligated to get rid of its ROTC program because the conditions of its ultimatum were not satisfied -- the ban on homosexuals in the military still stands," said one of the students who hung the signs and asked to remain anonymous.

Half the signs pleaded for the elimination of Dartmouth's ROTC program. "Bill Clinton's new policy towards gays in the military is equally as insulting and discriminatory as the previous policy," they stated. The other signs attacked the President's position on gays in the military, calling for readers to "question authority" and "fuck the U.S.A."
