Summer Assembly president named

Student Assembly President-elect Nicole Artzer '94 yesterday appointed Lara Phelps '95 as Assembly president for the Summer term.

Artzer said she chose Phelps after working with her on the Assembly's project committee, which addresses student services issues.

Phelps served as co-chair of that committee for part of this year.

The Assembly traditionally takes on a project-oriented focus during the summer, Artzer said.

Phelps is currently in Japan and could not be reached for comment.

Artzer said the Summer Assembly will concentrate on the student discount card and a menu book of local restaurants. Unlike last year, the Assembly will hire an outside company to produce the two items.

The student discount card will have national sponsors, Artzer said, which will allow students to use the card outside Hanover.

Artzer said the national sponsors will save the Assembly money and will produce a better product. Assembly members will have more time to work on other projects, such as the course guide, she said.

The Summer Assembly will monitor the recommendation made to terminate the education department and address issues affecting the Greek system, Artzer said.

The Assembly will also form a task force to look at extracurricular options at Dartmouth. "It will be a springboard for more options for extracurricular activities, for how students work outside the classroom," Artzer said.

"It's a major way to set up academics, extracurricular activities and administrative affairs -- the three-forked orientation of next year's Assembly," Artzer said.

She said the task force will look for new extracurricular options involving athletics, the Hopkins Center and the Greek system. The task force will also investigate the possibility of adding another sorority, she said.

"This is going to be a great Summer Assembly," Artzer said. "We're gathering a lot of information that we need for next year."

Before former President-elect Stewart Shirasu's resignation, he and Vice President-elect Steve Costalas '94 appointed David Shamberger '95 summer president and Alexandra Morgan '95 vice president.

Artzer said Morgan will still serve as vice president. Shamberger will work as the head of the extracurricular task force.
