Asian/Asian-American discussion group will resume in spring

The Asian/Asian-American Exploration Group, an organization formed to encourage open discussion about what it means to be Asian or Asian-American on campus, will resume with weekly discussions starting next term. The group, created and facilitated by Dick’s House counselors Da-Shih Hu and Sarah Chung, has operated in two previous terms and is open to self-identifying Asian and Asian-American undergraduate and graduate students.

Public Voices Fellowship increases professor presence in media

The Dartmouth Public Voices Fellowship, an initiative that partners Dartmouth faculty with OpEd Project journalists to increase the quality of professor’s engagement with major media outlets, has been extended for a third year. The fellowship will offer approximately 20 faculty members participation in seminars run by the OpEd project — a social venture dedicated to increasing the range of voices represented in national media — in addition to year-long coaching and mentorship, according to the project’s application.

In the midst of an administrative push from College President Phil Hanlon to increase faculty diversity and retention, a new group for women faculty and staff of color called EmpowHer is aiming to create a community to support its members, both personally and professionally.

Professors submit 51 proposals for seed funding

The Office of the Provost received 51 proposals from faculty members seeking seed funding for the 2014-2015 cycle, vice provost for research Martin Wybourne said. The program aims to help tenure-track and research faculty launch new scholarship, research and creativity at Dartmouth.

Grad school planning continues

The faculty task force devoted to creating an administratively independent graduate school for advanced studies at the College has begun to focus on primary areas for the proposal and plans to submit a final proposal to Provost Carolyn Dever by the beginning of spring term, dean of graduate studies and task force chair Jon Kull said.

Provost Dever calls for more faculty cluster proposals

Provost Carolyn Dever is pushing for faculty members across disciplines to send in a second round of proposals for the College’s Cluster Initiative — a program allowing faculty to form groups with the aim of solving complex issues of global importance. Dever sent out her request last Thursday, and proposals are due on Feb. 16.

DCAL names new director

Lisa Baldez, who took over as director of Dartmouth’s Center for the Advancement of Learning in November, said that the organization will focus on not only enhancing classroom facilitation through digital and experiential learning initiatives, but also on addressing diversity and sensitivity within teaching and learning at the College.

In meeting, trustees chat with students, talk academic goals

The Board of Trustees discussed academic goals, changes to Geisel Medical School and Thayer Engineering School and “Moving Dartmouth Forward” presidential steering committee progress this weekend. Reflecting on the weekend, College President Phil Hanlon said the meeting focused on academic excellence and productivity.
