As the snow on the ground and our excessive x-hours indicate, Winter Carnival is looming. As a first-year, I must admit I have no idea what exactly this weekend entails —I’ve heard something about the “Polar Plunge,” and someone told me that there’s a human dogsled race, but I can’t be sure what’s true and what’s not. I can confirm with my own eyes, however, that something is happening on the center of the Green, where a large chunk of ice and snow is slowly but surely being shaped into something regarding villains and heroes. So, in honor of my new knowledge and of Winter Carnival’s greatest tradition, I’ve taken a walk down memory lane (with the assistance of the Rauner Special Collections Library) and reviewed the top ten Winter Carnival ice sculptures of all time. Will this year’s make the list? TBD.

Whether drunk with their floor mates or watching a late night movie with friends, nearly every Dartmouth student has picked up the phone at one point or another to order some non-DDS pizza. Each of these students —while exercising different levels of cognitive functionality —has faced the same timeless question in this moment: where should I order pizza from? Should it be the tried and true Everything But Anchovies? The beloved Ramunto's Brick & Brew Pizzeria? Under the radar C&A's? Even sober and fully rested, there are no easy answers.

Here @Dartbeat, we’ve tweeted @HanlonStache enough times to realize that our esteemed President, despite having a tremendous mustache, is not in fact on twitter. So, to fill the void left by his and other administrator’s absences, we’ve imagined what the twitter profiles of President Phil Hanlon ’77, Director of GLOS Wes Schaub, Undergraduate Dean Natalie Hoyt and Provost Carolyn Dever might look like. We’ve also re-imagined the twitter of Dean of Admissions Maria Laskaris, who hasn’t used her account since 2012, when she sent a grand total of four tweets.

Twenty-six years ago this Friday, student assembly president Scott Sims ’89 was quoted in the pages of The Dartmouth criticizing the Committee on Student Life’s newly proposed changes to student dining plans. Sections of the article, authored by David Fredericks ’92, show its age —first year students now spend quite a bit more on their dining plans than the $775 they were expected to contribute under the 1989 proposed plan, for example. But it’s hard not to find something familiar in complaints against dining at the College — plus, they didn’t even have a stir fry station!

Even the biggest Scrooge can get hit with post-holiday blues. Your sparkling lights come down and you realize that you won’t receive any more gifts this winter. Suddenly it’s a new year, and you have to face all of this while dealing with a massive hangover. Here @Dartbeat, we know that one of the worst things about this time of year – well beyond having to go back to work and school – is that you can no longer enjoy listening to holiday music. Unfortunately, even the most aggressive radio stations seem to take holiday music off the air by January.

Although your four years in college will likely be some of the best of your life —especially at a place like Dartmouth — it can be tough sometimes, especially in your freshman year. You’re in a new place, surrounded by strangers and feeling lonely at times is inevitable. So, finding someone with whom you instantly connect with early on — someone who you can go for guidance, advice or just to talk about your daily life — can be pretty special.

Have you ever looked around campus and, after seeing the mountains, trees and endless vests, noticed an oddly high number of couples at Dartmouth? Despite the College’s famed hookup culture, I sure see a lot of happy couples around holding hands. This may be due to Dartmouth’s rumored 40-percent marriage rate between graduates — although other sources say it’s only 10 percent. Regardless, that means that between one and four out of every 10 students will marry another Dartmouth grad, and that means lots of them will be proposing to their significant others on our very campus. So here’s a guide to help you find the best place to do so:

As I was filling out my housing application for my freshman year at Dartmouth, a number of questions came into my head – do I want a double or a triple, am I neat or messy and is there any way to manipulate my application so that I avoid the River? But the biggest question of all I had was, what is a living learning community?
