Heads up everyone, Hanover could soon be the star of a new Food Network Challenge — the “Gelato Wars” have arrived. Can one small New Hampshire town support two separate gelato vendors?

Dirt Cowboy has started selling gelato and is currently giving out free samples with any purchase. Rumor has it that the store has owned gelato equipment for some time, but only recently decided to put it to use. Was Morano’s new store the push that Dirt Cowboy needed to get its equipment churning?

Maybe. But for now, it doesn’t look like Morano Gelato has anything to worry about. Dirt Cowboy’s gelato is creamy, but unlike the coffee, the frozen dessert is not scoring too well in the flavor department. Despite the wide range of options (pistachio, banana, coconut, tiramisu, chocolate-hazelnut and rum-raisin, to name a few), the gelato is uninspiring. The tiramisu tastes too much like rum and the ladyfingers are dry. The chocolate-hazelnut is bland and the pistachio tastes a bit artificial.

For tastier frozen treats, now is the perfect time to make the trip out to West Leb to stop by Ice Cream Fore U. For the ’14s who have never been, the serving sizes run big. Only order a large if you’re up to the challenge. You’ve been warned.
