No Connection Between Abramoff and Democrats

To the Editor:

In criticizing Sara del Nido's column on the Jack Abramoff scandal, Ralph A. Adams ("Liberal Bias Regurgitated," Jan. 6) wrongly claims that the embattled Abramoff holds similar ties to both Democrats and Republicans.

Although Abramoff has donated small sums to a few Congressional Democrats, his ties are significantly closer with Republicans. Abramoff was a key player in the Republicans' K Street Project of the 1990s, which was designed to ensure Republican domination of lobbying and public relations firms in Washington. As a result, the vast majority of Abramoff's employees and contacts in Congress are Republicans. Indeed, Abramoff's association with Republican leaders is so strong that indicted former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay once called Abramoff "one of my closest and dearest friends."

Before dismissing del Nido's column as "a typical liberal line of trash," Adams should have at least gotten his facts right.
