One-Sided Open-Mindedness

To the Editor:

Jon Wisniewski '07 is right to criticize those at Dartmouth who seem to want to stifle debate, criticism or even bad humor ("Supporting Free Speech When It Matters Most," Oct. 24). However, in trying to support his claims, he misses the truth in what others are angry about and does not address their points.

Jesus, to most Christians, was not "any historical figure or thinker," but an expression of God on Earth. Acknowledging this makes the resentment at Paul Heintz '06's cartoon more understandable. Likewise, his critique of history professor Ronald Edsforth and others passing out flyers is childish and insulting, and does not refute the very tenable idea that it is not constructive or worthwhile to debate certain issues -- for example, whether or not the Jewish Holocaust was a good thing or a bad thing -- and doing so may do more harm than good.

Wisniewski should take his own advice and be more open-minded.
