Football falls 23-12 to Harvard at home

It was billed as Dartmouth’s biggest game since the two met as undefeated teams in 1997. The game unfolded differently from the 24-0 contest 17 years prior, but ended in the same result: a Crimson victory. Dartmouth (5-2, 3-1 Ivy) fell short of achieving its first undefeated Ivy League season since 1996, and Harvard (7-0, 4-0 Ivy) managed to parry another challenge from the developing Big Green squad, 23-12.

Women’s XC wins Ivy title, men fourth

The women’s cross country team won the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships title for the second consecutive year with 47 team points, defeating runner-up Princeton University by 20 points. The men’s team finished fourth overall in the Saturday race at West Windsor Fields in Princeton, New Jersey.

The final scene at Burnham Field on Saturday night could not have been more telling. In the waning seconds of the overtime clash between the Ivy League’s top soccer teams, Dartmouth and Harvard University (9-4-2, 2-1-2 Ivy), the final whistle left Big Green players sprawled out on the pitch, completely spent after a grueling 1-1 (2OT) draw, and a particularly draining final sequence.

Big Green to take on Harvard Saturday in battle of Ivy titans

On Nov. 1, 1997, Dartmouth’s starting quarterback Dalyn Williams ’16 was 3 years old. Days earlier, the five-year-old Florida Marlins defeated the Cleveland Indians 3-2 in an 11-inning classic to win the World Series in seven games. That Saturday in Hanover was also the last meeting between Harvard and Dartmouth as undefeated football teams, and was the last time the Big Green opened a season 3-0 in the Ivy League. The game ended in a 24-0 Crimson victory and ended Dartmouth’s bid for back-to-back league titles.

Men’s soccer to face Crimson at home for top spot in Ivy League

In potentially the team’s most important game of the season, men’s soccer takes on Harvard University at Burnham Field Saturday night, looking to make up for last season’s matchup. This weekend is arguably the biggest of the year for Dartmouth athletics, rivaling last spring’s baseball and softball Ivy League Championship Series weekend. Four teams -— football, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country — will compete for a chance at Ivy League titles this weekend, while women’s soccer and field hockey look to play their way back into the conversation. Saturday will be enormous, with 16 of Dartmouth’s 34 varsity teams taking the field. Here are a few of our picks for the weekend.

Cross country prepares for Heps

This Saturday, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in Princeton, New Jersey for the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship. The women’s team will try to defend its title from last season, Dartmouth’s first since a four-peat that ended in 1997. The men’s side looks to claim its first championship since 2005.

Women’s hockey sets season goals high

Crew teams compete at Princeton Chase

Dartmouth’s three crew teams competed in the three-mile Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie over the weekend, with the men’s lightweight first varsity eight finishing sixth. After a disappointing outing at the Head of the Charles earlier this month, the women’s first eight rebounded with a better finish, coming in 13th of 50 boats.

Following a two-game win streak that included a 5-4 win over Holy Cross, the field hockey team has now lost two straight.

3-1 loss drops field hockey out of first

The field hockey team lost a crucial league game to Columbia University in its Sunday matchup and fell out of a tie for first place in the Ivy League. The Big Green (5-9, 3-2 Ivy) let up three goals in the first half and failed to equalize in the second despite shutting the Lions (11-4, 4-1 Ivy) out in the final frame.\n Dartmouth dropped to fourth place in the league, behind Columbia, Cornell University and Princeton University, who have 4-1 records in the Ancient Eight. The win extended the Lions’ win streak to five.

Football moves to 3-0 in Ivy with 27-7 win

After emerging victorious from its own homecoming game last weekend, the Dartmouth football team took home another homecoming win on Saturday, spoiling the weekend for Columbia University. The Big Green (5-1, 3-0 Ivy) surrendered only one touchdown to the Lions (0-6, 0-3 Ivy) and finished with a 27-7 win that was rarely in doubt. Despite being 3-0 in Ivy League play for the first time since 1997, the game marked the first time all season that the Big Green outgained an opponent in total offensive yards -— topping the Lions 432-326 — and the team’s first four-game win streak since 2003.

Women’s soccer to 2-0-3 Ivy with 1-0 win

Dartmouth’s road trip to New York, which will continue Monday against Marist College, began in victory Saturday with a 1-0 triumph over Columbia University. Tasha Wilkins ’15 drove a free kick that muscled its way into the net to give Dartmouth the lead in the 19th minute, and the Big Green never let the lead slip away.

Women’s hockey skates to 6-2 win vs. UNH

The women’s ice hockey team notched an impressive win in its first game of the season Sunday, beating the University of New Hampshire Wildcats 6-2 at Thompson Arena. The Big Green’s (1-0-0) top line of Kennedy Ottenbreit ’17, Laura Stacey ’16 and Lindsey Allen ’16 earned nine points on the afternoon.

With 1-0 win, men’s soccer surges to lead league

After dropping back-to-back games last week, the men’s soccer team regained momentum with a win over Columbia University, 1-0 in overtime at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Saturday. Not only did this victory avenge the Big Green’s (8-4-1, 3-1 Ivy) 2013 loss to the Lions (5-6-1, 1-2-1 Ivy), it also places Dartmouth atop the Ivy League standings.
