A survey conducted by the Labor Department found that more women than men have recovered their jobs since the recession, The Wall Street Journal reported. Today, approximately 67.5 million women have jobs, an increase from the previous record-high 67.4 million in early 2008. In contrast, 69 million men have jobs, slightly lower than the 70.9 million peak in mid-2007. A separate survey shows that the unemployment rate for women, at 6.9 percent, is slightly lower than the 7.6 percent rate for men. The trend can be partially explained by the disproportionate effects of the recession on different industries. The recession had the biggest impact on the male-dominated construction and manufacturing sectors, while female-dominated fields such as education, health and hospitality have weathered the effects of the economic downturn relatively well.
Two years ago, Dartmouth Dining Services, in conjunction with the reopening of the Class of 1953 Commons, announced that it would shift from the a la carte payment system to a block choice and meal swipe plan. The 2013 Survey of College and University Admissions Directors showed that around 60 percent of admissions directors had met their enrollment targets by May 1, the end of the traditional courtship period for admitted students, Inside Higher Ed reported. Approximately 46 percent of admissions directors reported that they were "very concerned" about meeting their targets this year, while an additional 30 percent reported that they were "moderately concerned." The results exemplify the difficulties that admissions directors often face when filling their incoming classes. The survey, conducted by Gallup with questions submitted by Inside Higher Ed, elicited responses from 381 admissions directors from a range of public and private higher education institutions.

Following the April 19 Dimensions show protest by Real Talk Dartmouth, a female protester tried to file an assault charge against a custodian who attempted to physically block her from entering the building, Hanover Police captain and interim chief Frank Moran said. The Dimensions show was held in the Class of 1953 Commons, and the building had already reached its maximum capacity. Although the protester said the custodian used physical force against her, the use of force in defense of property is justified under New Hampshire law RSA 627:8. Given the level and purpose of the force, Hanover Police determined that there is insufficient evidence of assault, Moran said. The protesters violated fire codes by putting the building over capacity, he said.
