Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Karl Furstenberg announced Monday his plans to retire by July of next year. The College will soon begin its search for Furstenberg's successor, according to Provost Barry Scherr.

A week after Harvard University's landmark decision to eliminate its early admissions program in the fall of 2007, Princeton University announced Monday that it will follow suit in abandoning early admission. Although both Harvard and Princeton made their announcements in the hope that other institutions will follow their lead, Dartmouth does not plan to alter its early decision program in the near future.

A series of debates, interactive discussions and formal presentations entitled "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: A Series on the Alcohol Culture at Dartmouth," were held throughout the week to stimulate discussion about the positive and negative issues of drinking. Topics included whether or not drinking was a problem on the Dartmouth campus, the effects of drinking on minority cultures, whether the drinking age should be changed and alcohol and its relationship to sexual violence. Active Minds, Drug and Alcohol Peer Advisors, Sexual Assault Peer Advisors, and the C. Everett Koop Scholars were among the event's sponsors.

As Emily Ulrich, a senior at Hanover high school and prospective member of the Class of 2010, decides whether or not to attend Dartmouth this fall, she has the advantage of factoring her extensive interactions with Dartmouth professors and students into her decision. Ulrich is one of more than 100 local high school students enrolled in at least one Dartmouth course this year through the Special Community Student Program, which lets students from local high schools and full-time employees of the College take one course per term at Dartmouth free of charge.

The Bipolar Ensemble, a group of first-year students in the Writing 5 course "Manic-Depression and the Creative Process," will perform at 7 p.m. in a coffeehouse concert this Thursday in Collis Commonground. Entitled "Composers of Moods and Madness," the event will feature student performances of music and poetry by composers and poets afflicted with manic-depression and depression.

Sally Elliott '08 and Brenna Hughes '09 recently founded their own non-profit organization called Swim to Empower. The program will offer swimming lessons to members of the community of Deep Creek on the tiny Bahamian island of Eleuthera.
