Whilethe men and women of Dartmouth have yet to graduate, graduations have been taking place at many schools across the nation, accompanied by the usual exhortations to seize the day, make an impact and otherwise hit the world head on. While there is a great deal of confidence expressed in the ability of the graduates to do this, it is no secret that the world waiting for them is sorely in need of fixing.

Day unto day uttereth speech. The clouds change. The seasons pass over our woods and fields in their slow and regular procession, and time is gone before you were aware of it." --Thomas Merton

Justas the recent bombing in Oklahoma has led to wider publicity for and broad condemnation of the inflammatory rhetoric of para-military organizations and other fountains of hate-inspired venom, the publicity surrounding issues of sexual assault on this campus recently has also led to increased publicity and condemnation. While this issue is receiving much-needed attention, let us differentiate between that which is constructive and helpful, and that which is mean-spirited and luridly destructive.

Brokenwindows and grimy exteriors contribute to an impression of barely suppressed ugliness creeping out of the walls while randomly strewn trash highlights the surrounding grounds. Is this a scene of a dark and narrow alley out of some inner-city landscape? Not in this case.

Whatkind of school is Dartmouth? Is this the kind of place where I would like to spend the next four years of my life?

Howmany times do we hear of tolerance here at Dartmouth? There are many places where this word can be encountered, and we often use it without reflecting on exactly what we mean when we say it. Professors, letters to the Editor of The Dartmouth, conversations and freshman orientation all tell us to be tolerant individuals.

Oneof the most interesting facets of advertising is targeting ads to the group or groups to whom you wish to sell your product. This probably works more often than we unwitting consumers are aware of, but such strategies can backfire as well. We see this all the time here at Dartmouth. College students, many with a satisfactory supply of disposable income, are a perfect group to focus on when selling a product.

The debate over the issue of abortion has been defined in terms that polarize and divide, and we often choose to ignore it and not be bothered. Any questions can be met with slogans and sayings that end discussion.

Doing some reading a short while agoo, I came across a fascinating word which I had never heard of before, pabulum. It was too colorful to ignore and too novel to forget, and although I finished reading the article without looking it up, I decided to go to the dictionary later on.

One lesson that I should ahve learned by now is that the most dangerous person is the fanatic -- he who blindly follows an ideal and she who is limited by her world-view. Ideals are dangerous, fanaticism leads to persecution, believing in one thing means rejecting and suppressing all others. These are opinions that I have held -- ideas that I always thought should be encouraged by my liberal arts education at Dartmouth.

According to Luis Gallop, director of the New Hampshire chapter of the Hemlock Society, "Death with dignity is the coming thing." He was referring to assisted suicide, which was examined at a panel discussion this past Thursday.

Pondering what to write about this week, I first decided that I would check out the paper and see what was going on in the world outside of Hanover. Although I have my subscription to the New York Times, I figured that I would get more up-to-date and comprehensive information. I turned on my computer, opened Netscape, and proceeded to ride the Third Wave towards a more enlightened future.

According to a survey of freshman attitudes released last month, this year's group of college freshmen is less interested than ever in keeping up with politics. "This year's college freshmen are more disengaged from politics than any previous entering class," concludes the survey, which is based on the responses of 237,777 students at 461 of the nation's two- and four-year colleges and universities, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Less than one- third of freshmen who enrolled last fall said keeping up with political affairs is an important goal in life -- a record low.

Intellectualism at Dartmouth. What does it involve and how can one find it? Is Darmouth an intellectual place? There are as many answers to these questions as there are students. However, some common themes underlie discussion of what intellectualism at Dartmouth truly involves.

Playing the role of prophet and predicting what will happen in the future -- defending all sorts of outlandish opinions and saying silly things -- is what we columnists are often known to do.

For most Dartmouth students, high school, and whatever image these words bring to mind, may seem like something from the distant past. However, the choices that we made in high school, such as what courses to take and what extracurricular activities to be involved in, continue to have effects in college as well.

According to many of its critics, gender feminism, the latest strain of feminism to emerge on campus, is composed of people who are actually damaging the movement for women's equality. They do not want to listen to any criticism, however well-founded and just it may be, and refuse to acknowledge their own failures, however blatant they may be. Inability to take criticism is not a major flaw if that is the only problem, since that may be only human, but gender feminists are known for alienating and ostracizing those within the Women's Movement who point out the numerous factual errors and hyperbole upon which their movement is based.

It is not surprising or at all unusual that Angela Davis said some of the things that she said in her harangue on Saturday, but the reaction to many of the things which she said was unnerving to say the least.

Ramon Cortines, the chancellor of New York City Public Schools, who spoke at Dartmouth this past week, is a man who should be listened to. His criticisms of the education establishment are incisive and often right on the mark. Cortines is a man who believes in the value of a solid education and believes in the ability of our society to educate its children.
