Just when you thought social life at Dartmouth was safe, it strikes --senior year. For a variety of reasons, the same old social scene just won't do. A vacuum is created, but thank goodness it is filled by the Senior Sub-Culture.

Isolated as we are here at the College, sometimes the U.S. Postal Service can be students' only significant source of information about the outside world. As a columnist, I am fortunate to receive numerous unsolicited pieces of valuable mail from my loyal following.

Idealismis not dead at Dartmouth. How fitting that a poem has occasioned the most recent upspring of idealistic commentary at the College. Perhaps I am the cynical senior, but I'm afraid we've seen it all before.

Overthree years of lunch at the Hop I have observed numerous things that made me chuckle. The Happy Hop Guy was a cheerful source of humor. But most of my laughs have been inspired by fellow students as they pass through each others lives.

This week five senior women, all past presidents of their respective sororities, called for "Sex Equity in the Greek System." As they elaborated their point at a forum Tuesday night it became clear that these women want the administration to make the formation of a new sorority a priority.

LastTuesday I had to cut an intellectualdiscussion short. I left not to pursue important research, not to further my mission of learning in anyway. I left because I was late for gym class. It makes me question what purpose the P.E. requirement serves at the College.

I'llbe glad when Playboy is long gone from our campus. Not out of any strong moral conviction about the implications of its presence, but because I have grown tired of a debate that misses the fundamental point.

The events in the last few weeks surrounding Emily Stephens '97 and her attempts to seek justice in a case of alleged sexual abuse have everybody talking and many students asking, "What the heck went wrong?"

Ifnothing else, the events of the last two weeks have shown that Sexual Assault is a complex issue. Yet, like all things complex, many people feel comfortable maintaining simple opinions on the subject. We must do better than that.

Itis official: The Commencement exercises for the Class of 1995 will take place on Memorial Field instead of in front of Baker Library. The most annoying facet of this change is that it has sent a large contingent of '95s into a fit of incessant whining.

For all the nonsense that occurs in the Student Assembly throughout the term there is some value in the campaign process itself. Important issues are brought up and discussed.

You have probably heard the line from Robert Burns: "The best laid schemes o' mice and men/Gang aft a-gley." But what does "Gang aft a-gley" mean? After Spring Break I now know that the correct English translation of Burns' line is, "The best laid schemes o' mice and men/Can end in a car fire."

Social options. It is probably the most over-- used, cliched PCism on campus. Everyone agrees we need more. Yet the discussion is remarkable for the lack of insight among the participants. Our conception of "social options" could use a healthy dose of reality.

What color are tennis balls? I know they come in all sorts of funky colors these days, and I've heard they were originally white. But normal tennis balls -- what color are they?

At Dartmouth, students are expected to love this place. I find that I fulfill this expectation. I love the emphasis on undergraduate education. I am glad to have a laid-back social system, where most parties are open to the entire campus. I love a lot of things about this place. So why am I not always walking around in unmitigated bliss?

There has been a lot of talk recently about the Student Assembly. Is it obsolete? Is it an adequate representation of student opinion? I recently discovered that a friend of mine, Doug Green '96, has an opinion on the subject.

Dartmouth students, when given the chance, have an ability to come through in a pinch.

While the elections are not until next term, one person already seems to be running for President of the Student Assembly: Jim Brennan '96.

Perhaps it is self-indulgent, but today my column takes the form of a parable; it is a true story that raises important questions about the nature of social life at the College.
