Dartmouth football is only two weeks into its season, but ice hockey is already stealing headlines. For several years, the Big Green (14-11-9 overall, 10-5-7 ECAC Hockey League) has been relegated to the role of bridesmaid -- so close yet so painfully far from league and national prominence. However, according to a couple of leading preseason polls, the College's wedding-bell blues may have come to an end.

Only a week removed from an impressive performance at the Volkl Shootout, Big Green tennis held court against Ivy rivals Yale, Princeton, Cornell and Columbia during last weekend's Yale Invitational. Led by co-captain David Webb '05 and strong doubles play, a young Dartmouth program gained valuable experience going into the ECAC Tournament next Friday.

Big Green tennis opened strong this year, more than holding its own in the annual Volkl Shootout. Competing at home against Army, Colgate, Niagara and the University of Buffalo, Dartmouth finished the three-day tournament boasting a 23-11 singles record and a dominant 11-2 mark in doubles.

History repeated itself this weekend. Two weeks ago, the Big Green men finished first at the Brown Invitational, while their female counterparts snagged second. At the University of New Hampshire Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, Dartmouth tracked and field gave an encore performance.

One point losses are tough to bear. So when the Dartmouth men got a chance to avenge their 65-64 loss to Quinnipiac University, they came out ready to play. Forcing a turnover off the tip-off and knocking down a three less than five seconds later, the Big Green sent a message: It's open season on bobcats.

Coming off Saturday's 56-54 win over Harvard, the Big Green men's basketball team was riding a wave of adrenaline and desperate to make up for its slow start. Unfortunately, Holy Cross was not ready to roll over and die. Dartmouth fell 60-52 to the Crusaders Tuesday night, but not before treating the Leede Arena crowd to yet another thriller.

Every so often, we seem to hear about a person literally brought back from the dead. Flat lining on the operating table, a shot of adrenaline or jolt of electricity tears the deceased corpse from the clutches of death and returns him or her among the living. Upon recovery, the person remarks that his perspective on the world has changed; every moment must be treasured, and every challenge must be met with maximum effort.

The Dartmouth women's swim team opened their season against Cornell and Harvard last Saturday, and to be quite honest, no one expected much. In recent seasons, successes were few and far between. Four years had passed since Dartmouth tasted an Ivy League victory, a streak of which the Big Red and Crimson were more than aware.

Undefeated in the Ivy League, Big Green women's soccer enters the NCAA Women's College Cup today riding a wave of confidence and a 10-game unbeaten streak. But first-round rival Florida State (13-7-1) couldn't care less.
