Football wins season opener over Valparaiso
In its first game since winning the Ivy League championship two years ago, the Dartmouth football team showed some signs of two years’ rust before coming away with a hard-fought 28-18 road victory over Valparaiso University on Saturday.
Spread of the delta variant disrupts fall reopening plans at peer institutions
As Dartmouth students settle into their first week of fall term, the College has looked to peer institutions and how they are returning to in person classes and dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks. While Dartmouth, like many other schools, has opted to reinstate an indoor mask mandate and increase testing frequency for vaccinated individuals, interim Provost David Kotz previously announced that the College is not currently considering any outdoor mask mandates, gathering restrictions or social distancing requirements.

Teszler: Congress Has No Choice
In the late hours on the first night of Sept. 1, the Supreme Court allowed Texas’s law banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy to go into effect. The decision leaves the door open for further litigation, but in the meantime, the consequences have been disastrous. Abortion services have ground to a near-halt in Texas, depriving thousands of people of access to a vital form of healthcare. The decision was a legal travesty, best summed up by a line in Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s sharp dissent — “a majority of Justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand.”

Rockefeller Center event examines the “Science of the Constitution”
On Sept. 17, the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy held its first event of the term — a celebration of Constitution Day and the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. Students and community members gathered both in person and virtually to hear government professor Sonu Bedi deliver a lecture titled “The Science of the Constitution: The Supreme Court and a Practice of Disagreement.”
Student Spotlight: TDX band The Dandelions hopes to expand their repertoire and fan base
Connected by their fraternity and an appreciation for classic rock, Theta Delta Chi’s resident band, The Dandelions, celebrates the catharsis of musicality with their performances. Named after a friend’s infamous dandelion wine, the band comprises Keeks George ‘22 on guitar and vocals, guitarist Peter Chabot ‘22, Cam Guage ‘22 on saxophone and vocals, Nate Koidahl ‘22 on drums and percussion, Connor Morris ‘22 on piano and vocals and bassist TJ Bryan ‘23.

Women’s volleyball off to a winning start
The women’s volleyball team is off to a strong 8-1 start following its return to competition. The Big Green opened their season with the Lehigh Steel Tournament in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. They secured wins over SUNY Binghamton (3-0), Lehigh University (3-2) and St. Francis College (3-1).

Women’s soccer has successful start as attention turns to upcoming Ivy League play
The Dartmouth women’s soccer team opened its 2021 season on a hot streak, going unbeaten in its first five games. However, the Big Green has since lost its last two in hard-fought matches against Fairfield University and the University of Kansas. With nine days between contests, the team does have some time to shake off these close losses before beginning Ivy League play on September 25 at Brown University.
Inside the Hash Marks: A Long Journey
In a new column for the fall, Dartmouth long snapper Josh Greene ’23 will be relating his experience playing for the Big Green, covering topics such as the team’s preparation following COVID-19, the academic-sport-life balance required of an athlete at an Ivy League school and other musings on his experience in Hanover. This first column reflects on Greene’s experience returning to play this weekend against Valparaiso University. After the column was written, the Big Green won, 28-18.
