Like the dancing flames of the Homecoming bonfire that morph and grow throughout the night, the weekend itself has transformed from its origins in the 19th century. One of the College's most enduring traditions, Homecoming weekend draws meaning both from its atmosphere of excitement and its ability to connect students to the event's extensive history according to alumni interviewed by The Dartmouth.

The most important part of Homecoming is what we share: Dartmouth, and all the good and bad things this school has offered us since 1769. More than any other time at the College, Homecoming is about friends, fun, more than a little mischief and the beautiful color palette of the fall leaves.

The topic of illegal immigration has been much discussed by the Republican presidential candidates, but it has generated a lot of heat and very little light. It is important that we are aware of issues that the candidates either don't mention or misrepresent.

Brown University President Ruth Simmons upheld the university's current policy which prohibits the Reserve Officers' Training Corps from maintaining an on-campus presence following a report conducted by the university's Committee on ROTC which was made available to the public in September, The Brown Daily Herald reported. In a letter to the Brown community, Simmons backed the committee's decision that Brown should collaborate with the U.S. Department of Defense to partner with colleges in the surrounding area that offer ROTC programs. Brown students can currently partake in an Army ROTC program at Providence College, but there are no institutions in Rhode Island that currently offer Naval or Air Force ROTC programs, according to The Daily Herald. ROTC proponents allege that Simmons' decision harms students by limiting their exposure to the military, but others said that Brown should not cooperate with the ROTC whatsoever since it discriminates against transgender individuals. Brown's Board of Directors will review Simmons' decision at its meeting this weekend. Brown's policy on the ROTC dates back to the Vietnam War, when anti-military sentiment led to the ban of the program, The Daily Herald reported.

The House of Representatives' proposal to narrow the eligibility criteria for federal Pell Grants which would render the highest-income beneficiaries in the program's current form ineligible would not affect Dartmouth students, Senior Associate Director of Financial Aid Laura McClay said in an interview with The Dartmouth. To make up for such a loss in federal funds, the College would provide scholarships for those students affected by new rules, McClay said.

Hello Dartmouth and happy Homecoming. I first want to wish all of the alumni safe travels as they return to the greatest place on earth. I hope the older alums can relive their glory days while singing the Alma Mater around the bonfire. I hope the younger alums manage to avoid H-Po and S&S this weekend. Many young alums mistake immunity from Parkhurst as a free pass to do whatever their drunken brains tell them to do. But honestly, anyone who has graduated from college should never be involved in a keg stand.

Ever since the debut of the original iPad, I was a tablet basher. While I always acknowledged the sleek body and interface of the devices, I never saw any dire practical uses for them. I had my laptop for all of my internet needs and my phone for e-mail on the go. I never thought that a third expensive device would add any productivity to my life; however, my dear friends at Sony sent me a little device that they promised would change my opinion. I’ve had the new Sony Tablet S for a week now and I’m happy to say that I’ve already started to believe in the tablet’s potential.
