It's not easy being a legend. By definition, it means that one's reputation is so great that it's nearly impossible to match in reality. Moreover, as time passes, the reputation only grows to greater proportions, as the actual person behind it ages and looks less and less like the legendary persona.

After an hiatus of approximately 20 years, the Daniel Webster Senior Dinners have been revived for members of the Class of 2005. Wednesday night marks the fifth and final dinner of the series, to which all seniors are invited to mingle with alumni to ease their transition to life away from Dartmouth.

Weekends and nights in Baker-Berry are most Dartmouth students' worst nightmares, but some determined seniors dedicated multiple terms in the library in hopes of realizing the Dartmouth experience to the fullest. Seniors, underclassmen, administrators and faculty gathered at the Top of the Hop Tuesday evening to reflect on senior projects such as honors theses, senior fellowships and culminating work in the arts.

But tonight, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., all three will be making an appearance in Collis Commonground to help celebrate "Red, White & Jew," a party marking the 350th anniversary of Jews' arrival to America.

Student Assembly launched a new public bicycle program Monday, casting away the days of bright green, ineffective bikes and introducing high-handled black beauties and a revamped circulation program. The initiative intends to help solve transportation issues for interested students and correct the failures of past bike programs.

With the Big Green's oldest continuous race up for contention on Sunday afternoon, the Dartmouth men's heavyweight crew team traveled to Syracuse, N.Y., with the hopes of capturing the Packard Cup. With a time of 6:16.7, Dartmouth's varsity eight bested the Syracuse Orangemen, whose time of 6:26.7 proved too weak. This win enabled Dartmouth to surpass the .500 mark for the season and to arrive at a 5-4 record.

May 2 marked the deadline for those accepted by Teach for America to agree to join its ranks. Across the country some 17,000 applicants applied to the two-year teaching program that places uncertified teachers in under-resourced school districts. The attraction is to join an organization committed to closing the achievement gap between low-income and high-income areas.

With this season's intense student body presidential elections two weeks behind them, election officials sat down Friday to come up with recommendations for next year's student-run Elections Planning and Advisory Committee. The biggest change EPAC will recommend is that most BlitzMail regulations on negative campaigning be thrown out.

The Dartmouth College Committee of Chairs met Monday to discuss a report from the Committee on Organization and Policy that seeks to change the role of the Dean of the Faculty. A proposal before the Committee of Chairs, based on the COP's report, aims to make the dean of the faculty chair of the Committee. Currently, the President of the College acts as chair of the committee.

Trading statistics and one-liners, economics professor Andrew Samwick and government professor Jeff Smith faced off in an insightful and nonconfrontational debate over Social Security Monday evening in the Rockefeller Center. Smith represented the Democratic position, arguing that the Republican proposal to fix the Social Security program is irresponsible. Samwick, a national expert on Social Security reform, represented the Republicans.

David French, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, said yesterday that the organization would improve Dartmouth's free speech rating from a poor "red light" to the highest rating, a "green light."
