Chances are, if you are a member of a Co-ed, Fraternity or Sorority house, or a varsity athlete, and are playing with a usual or romantic partner, you probably won your pong game last night -- at least according to John Pryor, the College statistician and director of Student Affairs Planning, Evaluation and Research. Hoping to explain and evaluate the increasing popularity of drinking games at Dartmouth, Pryor has prepared a study that looks specifically at the phenomenon of beer pong at the College.

Outside of the tennis world, the French Open receives very little attention when compared to its counterparts, namely Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. The reason for this relative obscurity is simply that the French Open is weird. While most big name Australian and American tennis players dominate during the grass court and hard court seasons, there is a whole other group, the clay court clan, who dominate the red clay of Roland Garros. Many from the clay court clan come from either Spain or South America, and all seem to have long, loopy strokes tailored to playing on red clay. Recent winners of the French Open are all members of this group: Gaston Gaudio, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Albert Costa, Carlos Moya, and Gustavo Kuerten.

I read Friday's Verbum Ultimum (May 20) with much ambivalence. Certainly, anyone should be alarmed when a trustee candidate claims about how weblogs have taught him about the "real" situation on campus. As an occasional visitor of the blogs, I read them more for their entertainment value than anything else because I enjoy reading the strong opinions of some of their very bright authors. However, weblogs are hardly an outlet of unbiased and legitimate news, and I think that the candidates recognized this by posting news articles and editorials (some written by this very Editorial Board itself) in defending their stances.

Theassbook.net may be able to remedy the lack of online flirting options available through Thefacebook.com. Dartmouth's government and economics departments will each lose a popular member of its faculty at the end of the year. Before a squirming blanket of caterpillars returns to Hanover sidewalks this spring, the Office of Facilities, Operations and Management is taking action with its first insecticide campaign. FO&M's plan of attack, however, is not focused on saving the soles of students' shoes, but on preserving the College's historic trees.

References to "Dartmouth employees" usually conjure up images of those who work directly for education: faculty, office staff and others involved in the day-to-day workings of the College. Less visible employees, however, include the staff of the Hanover Inn. Dartmouth's ownership of the Inn places all staff members under the general umbrella of the College's employee payment policy. Until very recently, the policy dictated, in a handbook given to all Dartmouth employees, that those who work between the hours of 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. are entitled to a certain amount of extra pay, called a shift differential.
