Sweat, diesel fuel and tedious repetitious work. Those were the major components of my summer after freshman year. I worked in a fuel-injector remanufacturing plant while paying dues to the local UAW. It certainly was not easy or fun in a pleasurable sense but I might dare say that I learned more than I have in some terms here at Dartmouth.

It's no secret that the Internet is home to some of the most inane nonsense the human mind has ever conceived. Indeed, next to porn, utterly useless websites have become some of the most popular areas on the web, a fact that only points to one undeniable truism-man is inherently pathetic. With an infinite amount of space upon which to create and express his hitherto repressed strivings to a virtually universal public, man shows us what he's really about-nothing at all. Indeed, one surprisingly motivated drunk wrote out the entire lyrics to the preschool classic "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall." Be sure to connect to www.virtual-media.com/vm/presents/ouzo/99bottles.html and get pictures of the wall at each stage of the song.

Nothing is the same anymore. When I was growing up, way back in the early 90s, we didn't listen to the music of a pallid, adrogenous "singer" named Marilyn Manson. Pardon me for not praising masterpieces like "Angel with Scabbed Wings" and "Antichrist Superstar." Back then, all we needed was a good dose of Vanilla Ice to take us to cloud nine and back. He may not be an answer to The Beatles, but at least he doesn't have a surgically implanted breast and release albums like "Smells Like Children." Had Marilyn reared his/her ugly head back then, we would've made some highly offensive and politically incorrect comments about him and gone back to memorizing the words to "Ice, Ice Baby." Meanwhile, Manson is being hailed a prophet of our generation. Not of my generation, he isn't.

There is a very important vote on campus today:Coke or Pepsi. Oh wait, there's another vote that will decide the future of social life at the College, but no one knows what's going on with that because the electoral process for it is a disaster.

Or so the administration says. Last Monday, the administration issued a moratorium on the Coed, Fraternity and Sorority Council, prohibiting the recognition of any new Greek social organizations on campus. This is a powerful message from the College because it's intent is to prevent people from investing time and energy into creating positive social outlets for themselves "just in case" something happens next winter with the Trustees' new steering committee and the Greek system no longer exists. I had not realized that was an option, and I do not think that the majority of the student body feels like that is a viable option, either. So, my questions is, is anyone listening to the students? Because at this point in time, I don't feel like anyone is.

I told one of my friends recently that it's probably healthy to have a really good idea once a week or so. This is last week's idea. I didn't think much about it until it struck me that the preliminary D-Plan assigned for me at random on DarTerminal was only my second choice, and therefore not the one that I think will fit my academic needs.
