New Hampshire Senator Bob Smith announced yesterday "a decision of conscience" to leave the Republican party. He expects to remain in the 2000 Presidential race, either as an independent or a third party candidate. Though his move has been called "radical," most think that it will not make a difference for his campaign.

In the opening scene of "American Pie," the parents of virgin high-school senior Jim (the charming Jason Biggs) catch him masturbating while he watches his cable provider's scrambled pornography channel. When this scene is followed by Jim's obnoxious but amusing friend Stifler (a Jim Carrey-esque Seann William Scott) accidentally drinking a glass of beer mixed with semen, it becomes obvious that "American Pie" seeks to be a frank and surprisingly modern look at the topic of teen sexuality.

I read with interest Sarah Rubenstein's article of July 8, 1999, "Controversial Social Space Ideas Fill Report." Her last paragraph lists the names of those people who submitted Proposal 26 of the Task Force Report, the part discussing single-sex housing. It's a telling list of names. Excepting Earl Jette and Brian Kunz of Outdoor Programs, all of the authors of this proposal are College administrators of one kind or another, most harbouring predictable ideological agendas now outdated and tedious to most people familiar with Dartmouth.

If some groups submitting proposals to the Five Principles Task Force have their way, Dartmouth may soon be joining many other Ivy League colleges in offering the option, or the requirement, of housing that concentrates first year students in specific residence halls.

Greek leaders expressed widely differing responses to Saturday's Steering Committee tours through almost every Greek house, some pleased with the receptiveness of those on their tours, and others criticizing what they saw as a "rude" and rushed atmosphere.

In addition to their high-profile touring of campus Greek houses, the Steering Committee also engaged in less talked-about activities this weekend, meeting with numerous people involved in the implementation of the Trustees' Five Principles.

Despite comments in February by Trustee Chair Stephen Bosworth '61 that fraternity and sorority rush would be affected in the fall of 1999, it now seems unlikely the College's social and residential life system will see significant change before the graduation of the Class of 2000.

Sophomore summer has brought to my life a beautiful new pastime - bug bite counting. I'm from Los Angeles and although as a camp counselor I spent most of my past summers outdoors, I've never come close to accumulating the number of bite marks that I have at present count. Usually in L.A. I'd be sporting one or two bites - maybe three if it was particularly humid - but nothing reaches today's tally.

The release of the Social and Residential Life Task Force Report revealed serious problems in the implementation process of the Trustees' initiatives. Approximately four months before the Steering Committee plans to announce recommendations about the College's social and residential life system to the full Board of Trustees, student ideas on those changes are still substantially absent.

Despite the convergence of Tubestock and Sophomore Family Weekend on July 23, it still appears neither event will be moved to accommodate the other.

Although William King '63 arrived on campus for the first time in the fall of 1959, his father, Class of 1933, had told him enough to make him feel as if Dartmouth was old news.

In addition to discussing the Residential and Social Life Task Force Report this weekend, the Initiative Steering Committee will take a tour of all Greek houses which volunteer to participate in a Greek-initiated plan to show it their facilities.

With temperatures in the high 80s and 90s over the past few days, the only thing on most students' minds yesterday was the College's lack of air-conditioned space. Many students were holed up in such places as the Reserve Corridor, Kresge Library and Webster Hall, where cool air is abundant - and it's a good thing they were.

In a small white house on North Main Street is one of Hanover's most fascinating museums - the Daniel Webster Cottage. The cottage, built in 1780 for Eleazar Wheelock's daughter Abigail at the time of her marriage to Reverend Slyvannus Ripley, contains many artifacts of early New England life.

At first I thought it was just the air conditioning. Pleasantly cool in the theater compared to the sweltering outdoor temperatures, any movie would seem great, I said. Then the quirkiness began - offbeat movies are some of my favorites - and I thought that was it - an hour and a half of air conditioning and some intelligent, witty humor.

I must say I liked summer term a lot more for the first couple days. It was so nice and quiet here, and there was no one in Food Court ever. Then the campers arrived.

While most Dartmouth students were watching a cappella performances and swing dancing during Dartmouth Up All Night activities last spring, summer Student Assembly President Jorge Miranda '01 was lying somewhere in the Collis Center, catching up on some much needed sleep.

Founded by Amar Dhand '01, the Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science recently published its first issue ever this spring. The journal features scientific articles written by undergraduates with occasional contributions from Dartmouth faculty.

When the Social and Residential Life Task Force headed by then-Acting Dean of the College Dan Nelson requested student input on the Initiatives, many groups jumped at the chance.

With the party primaries for the 2000 presidential elections rapidly approaching, some Dartmouth students spent the Fourth of July weekend showing their support for a favorite candidate.
