The Dartmouth men's tennis team began its indoor season this past Friday, competing against DePaul University in Chicago, Ill. Although the team fought hard, it lost to the Blue Demons, 7-0, before rebounding to beat the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay in Chicago on Saturday, 6-1.

Although the faceoff between Dartmouth (7-4, 0-3 Ivy) ranked seventh and Cornell, the sixth-seeded team, was close, the Dartmouth women's team had defeated Cornell earlier this season at the Ivy Scrimmages and improved from last season's 2-7 loss.

Despite strong play from several less experienced players including Faziah Steen '13, who scored a career high in points on Saturday, and Janelle Ross '14, who recorded her first double-double on Friday the Dartmouth women's basketball team could not match Cornell University and Columbia University, and lost to both over the weekend.

Holdcroft was the storyline for much of the weekend. The freshman goalie stopped 51 of 52 shots she faced in the two games and improved her season record to 10-5. She has not allowed more than one goal in her last five games, all Dartmouth victories.

After a month-long search process that involved both athletes and coaches, former Stanford University assistant coach Theresa Wagner was named the new women's soccer head coach on Friday. She succeeds former head coach Angie Hind, who left the program in December to work for the Scottish Football Association after six years as coach of the Big Green.

As most sports enthusiasts would say, it is fun to engage in a debate about which team/player/school is best. Last week, I was in the midst of one of these discussions with a high school friend of mine, who attends a major sports college in a power conference. While I was giving him a hard time about his team's recent bowl loss, he threw back the one line I was horrified to hear "At least our players are going pro, who does Dartmouth have in the NFL?"

With the women's tennis season getting underway on Saturday with a 5-2 win against Temple University, I sat down with Molly Scott '11 to chat about her game and her final season at Dartmouth. Scott who was chosen as a First Team All-Ivy selection for both singles and doubles the past two years comes into this season ranked the fourth best singles player in the Northeast Region and, along with teammate Melissa Matsuoka '14, as part of the sixth best doubles pairing.

"I thought it was a great start to our season," captain Georgiana Smyser '11 said. "Temple is a strong team, but we came out strong and really set the tone. We had some strong performances from our freshmen and we really just took it away from the beginning. We are a young team and some of us are coming back from injuries in the fall, but overall it was a really great day."

The Big Green (7-4-1, 11-6-2 ECAC) opened play on Friday night in Schenectady, N.Y., with its matchup against Union (16-7-3, 8-3-1 ECAC). The Dutchmen entered the game perched above the Big Green in both the U.S. College Hockey Online coaches' rankings and the ECAC standings.

The Dartmouth women's swimming and diving team lost a close contest at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, 159.5-139.5, according to DartmouthSports.com. Despite the loss, several Big Green swimmers came close to matching personal bests and varsity records. Charlotte Williams '13 took the top spot in the 400-yard individual medley, with a time of 4:31.92 achieving a personal best for the event. Christine Kerr '14 comfortably won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:02.15. Kerr also tied for first place in the 200-yard freestyle with her best time of the year, 1:51.56. In the diving events, Katy Feng '14 won the three-meter and one-meter events by large margins.

The Big Green women ensured that they would retain their spot in the top eight of the College Squash Association rankings with this weekend's win, beating Williams (6-7, 3-0 NESCAC) for the first time since 2008. Coming into the match, the Dartmouth women were ranked eighth and Williams trailed in ninth place.

As the defending Ivy League champion, the Yale men's team (5-0, 2-0 Ivy) is currently in first place in the League standings and was a formidable opponent for the Big Green men (3-1, 0-1 Ivy). Historically, Dartmouth has had trouble against the Bulldogs, so members from the Big Green were not disappointed with the 2-7 finish.

With eight seconds remaining on the clock in the second overtime, the Big Green men's soccer team lost a spot in the Elite Eight of the Division I NCAA tournament with a goal from No. 8 seed University of California, Los Angeles. The teams battled for two 45-minute halves and nearly two 10-minute overtime periods, but UCLA junior midfielder Eder Arreola ended the Big Green's post-season, 2-1.

Five Big Green football players were selected to the All-Ivy First Team the most the team has had in the past 13 years. tri-captain Charles Bay '11, tri-captain Tim McManus '11, Shawn Abuhoff '12, Ryan O'Neill '12 and Nick Schwieger '12 were all recognized by the League's coaches. Bay, a defensive end, missed the early part of the season with an injury, but finished the year leading the Ivy League in sacks and forced fumbles. Wide receiver McManus led the Big Green in receptions and receiving yardage after missing his junior season with a broken leg. Defensive back and return specialist Abuhoff became the first Big Green player ever chosen at multiple positions after leading the League in passes defended and punt return yardage. Abuhoff is the conference's leading returner and cover man. O'Neill, a left guard, was an anchor on the offensive line that paved the way for a great rushing attack and excellent pass protection. Tailback Schweiger took the Ivy League rushing title with 1,133 yards the second most rushing yards in a season in Dartmouth history. Schweiger also tied the school record in rushing touchdowns with 14 during this season. Dartmouth and Yale University tied for fourth in most honors this season with 10 players overall honored for 11 positions. Ivy champion University of Pennsylvania had 20 players selected at 21 positions, topping the League.
