What a week it was. The Pennsylvania State University community found itself in one of the most controversial scandals in sports history. Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos was kidnapped in Venezuela (which, amazingly, received minimal media time due to the Penn State situation). Other notable stories from this week include me almost perishing due to food poisoning and Hanover weather shifting from being 60 degrees out to snowing within a matter of 24 hours.

Two Dartmouth teams took big steps forward this weekend in their effort to improve on last season's records. The men's and women's swimming and diving teams used strong showings from rookies and veterans alike to defeat Cornell University, before both teams fell to powerhouse Harvard University on Saturday. After running to individual titles two weekends ago at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, Ethan Shaw '12 and Abbey D'Agostino '14 maintained pace at the NCAA Northeast Region Cross Country Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday. With their outstanding performances, both Shaw and D'Agostino qualified to represent the Big Green at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 21.

In its first-ever season-opener against a team from the Big 12 Conference, the Dartmouth women's basketball team lost, 54-20, against Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. The loss came despite an impressive defensive performance by the Big Green (0-1), which forced the Wildcats to commit 28 turnovers.

While the end result did not fall in the Big Green's favor, the Dartmouth men's basketball team's performance in its season-opening game against Rutgers University showed that the team has the skills and the willpower to exceed expectations this season. While many have predicted another last-in-the-Ivy-League finish for the Big Green, players from the team are confident that it can be a competitive force in the conference this season.

"This is the biggest win of my career," co-captain Nick Schwieger '12, who rushed for 137 yards on a career-high 37 carries, said. "It's a great win for the program. Three Dartmouth football players were selected as members of the Capital One Academic All-District Football Team on Thursday, according to a Dartmouth athletic department press release. The College Sports Information Directors of America announced that linebacker Luke Hussey '11 Th'12, tight end John Gallagher '12 and wide receiver Tim McManus '11 were selected as members of the first team for the University Division of District I, which includes Division I institutions in several Northeastern states. Hussey, who is an engineering major with a 3.94 GPA, was also a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is awarded to the country's best student-athlete in football. Hussey recorded a career-high 63 tackles this season, contributing to his career total of 124 tackles. Gallagher, an economics major with a 3.59 GPA, is a four-year starter and has recorded 19 catches this season for 169 yards. McManus, a history major with a 3.48 GPA, is a three-time captain and has the fifth-most receptions in Dartmouth history with 134. McManus only played in three games this year due to a concussion.

The Dartmouth men's soccer team now ranked first in the Ivy League had plenty to celebrate after its win over Cornell University at Burnham Field on Saturday. The 3-1 victory on the team's senior day elevated the Big Green to its first-place status, and co-captain Lucky Mkosana '12 broke the Dartmouth all-time record for both goals and points with his 34th career goal.

Both crew teams and the women's tennis team had successful showings at home events this weekend. With its hopes of finishing with a winning record Ivy League record hanging in the balance, the Dartmouth women's volleyball team split back-to-back five-set matches on the road this weekend against Cornell University and Columbia University. The Big Green (14-9, 6-6 Ivy) maintained its fourth-place position in the League with the results, two games ahead of Harvard University with two games left to play.

Although it was charged with three delay-of-game penalties due to a continuous flood of tennis balls from Big Green fans, the Dartmouth men's hockey team handily defeated Princeton University, 5-3, in front of almost 4,000 spectators on Saturday. The win capped a weekend sweep for the Big Green (3-2, 2-0 ECAC), which defeated Quinnipiac University, 5-4, with a late comeback effort on Friday.

The Big Green rushed for 379 yards overall, its highest total since 1991. Quarterback Conner Kempe '12 also passed for a season-high 161 yards, and Dartmouth's 540 total yards were its most in a game since 2001.
