The inability of the temporary referees to control professional games highlighted the difference in skill required to officiate games at various levels and damaged the integrity of the league for the duration of their stint. The replacement referee controversy, however, brought an uncharacteristic amount of attention and appreciation to the officiating profession.

Vince Marriott: Baseball playoff season is upon us, and once more I can't wait for having every night of the week occupied by closely contested playoff series. This week, I'll be keeping a close eye on the series between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, as this matchup is of near-historic significance. The Orioles have long been the bottom-dwellers of the AL East, and this series gives them the chance to prove once and for all that they can take on the best baseball team in history (in terms of championships won). Even though the Yankees took the division this year, I expect this series to last a while, and Game 3 will be pivotal. (Wednesday, TBS)

Hello readers. I am going to confide in you I am a man of many fears. The thought of getting shot makes my amygdala pulsate. Just looking at a spider has caused me to wet myself on several occasions. But my two greatest fears of all are heights and back flips. Picturing either one of these is enough to make me shudder, shiver and quiver. So if I had to do both at the same time that is, disorient myself while high in the air with a distinct possibility of splitting my skull open like a cantaloupe well, let's just say I wouldn't be in my happy place.

This week, I sat down with cross country and track star Abbey D'Agostino '14 to discuss the season, her performance at the Olympic trials and her future in running.

The Dartmouth women's volleyball team lost twice at home over the weekend, falling to Yale University in four sets on Friday before dropping a match to Brown University in straight sets on Saturday.

The Dartmouth men's tennis team was in action over the weekend as the team hosted the annual Dartmouth Shootout at the Boss Tennis Center in Hanover. The Big Green made the most of its home court advantage by dominating its challengers from Williams College, Stony Brook University, Middlebury College and the United States Military Academy.

Dartmouth began the game aggressively, controlling possession from the first minute of play. About four minutes into the contest, the Big Green had its first scoring opportunity when Chrissy Lozier '14 shook her defender and fired a shot from about 30 yards out, just missing the upper right corner of the goal.

The Big Green (5-5, 1-1 Ivy) battled to victory over the fiery Bulldogs (3-5-3, 0-1-1 Ivy), getting its quest for a second consecutive conference title back on track following a 2-1 extra-time defeat in last week's Ivy opener at Princeton University. Effective build-up play coupled with an impressive defensive performance proved to be the perfect formula for victory in a match that the Big Green consistently dominated.

Down 14-13 at halftime, the Dartmouth football team methodically pulled away from Yale University to win 34-14 on Saturday in New Haven, Conn., as the Big Green's stringent defense and strong play from unheralded backups gave Dartmouth its first 3-1 start since 1997 and its first win over Yale since 2002.

RB Akil Sharp, senior, Princeton University. Sharp has scored four rushing touchdowns in only three games for a less-than-potent Princeton offense. His four scores are only two less than opponents have scored against the Tigers this year. He is averaging 52 rushing yards per game and looks to be a crucial component in Princeton's resurgence in Ivy League football.

Vince Marriott: My What to Watch For picks have centered a lot on college football recently, but I can't think of anything I'd want watch this week more than No. 4 Louisiana State University taking on No. 10 University of Florida on Saturday. LSU keeps slipping in the polls due to some recent close finishes, but this was one of the teams favored to win the national title at the start of the season, and I still think that they have a great shot of going all the way. Florida is no joke, either. That state always seems to produce top talent, and the Gators tend to get the best of it. Even though No. 3 Florida State University seems to be the better team this year, there are too many players and coaches on Florida's sidelines that know how to win to count them out of the national title race just yet. Hello readers. You may be feeling mopey and blue with a glum case of the Mondays, but cheer up! You are about to find out what happens when a Regular Ron and a women's varsity competitor clash in the squash box. This week, I challenged Corey Schafer '13 to a battle of the sexes. Corey was Dartmouth's No. 1 player last season and earned first team All-Ivy honors for her performance on the court. Facing her would be no easy task.

This week, I sat down with men's golfer Dan Slavin '15 to discuss the team's fall season and how the team is preparing for its upcoming Ivy League match play.

After three weeks without competition, the Dartmouth men's and women's cross country teams were eager and prepared to return to action at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday. On the men's side, top harrier Will Geoghegan '14 finished fifth individually to lead the Big Green to a fourth-place team finish. Abbey D'Agostino '14 coasted to a win in the women's race by 24 seconds, helping the Dartmouth women to a fifth-place team finish.

On Friday, the Big Green (2-11, 1-2 Ivy) fell to the Quakers (6-8, 1-2 Ivy) in three sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-18. Penn has now won 12 straight against Dartmouth.

Trying to improve on its four-game win streak, the Dartmouth women's soccer team fell just short on Saturday, losing to Princeton University, 2-1, in Princeton, N.J. The teams played 74:31 without a goal before both offenses began to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Despite a late goal by Chrissy Lozier '14, the Big Green (6-3, 1-1 Ivy) could not overcome two goals by the Tigers (6-3-1, 2-0 Ivy) and suffered its first Ivy League loss of the season.
(10/01/12 2:00am)
In a heartbreaking loss, the Big Green fell to Princeton University, 2-1, in overtime on the road on Saturday. Despite a valiant effort by Dartmouth goalkeeper Noah Cohen '14, the Big Green (3-5, 0-1 Ivy) came up short in its Ivy League opener, making this coming Saturday's home game against Yale University all the more important.
(10/01/12 2:00am)
After Dartmouth won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, Penn took advantage of its first opportunity with the ball to go on a methodical 13-play, 84-yard drive to score the game's opening touchdown. Dartmouth's offense failed to respond for most of the quarter, with quarterback Alex Park '14 seeing relentless pressure that would be a theme of the game.
(10/01/12 2:00am)
Due to the National Hockey League's lockout that is threatening to cancel the 2012-2013 season, several former Big Green players are out of a job and out of pay, forced to seek training and playing time elsewhere.

Vince Marriott: It's not often that one can point to a Dartmouth sporting event and say that it is in the national spotlight, but this Saturday's home football game against the University of Pennsylvania will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports Network, and it's a game that no one should miss. After last season's heartbreaking 22-20 loss under the lights in Memorial Field's first-ever night game, the Big Green should be coming out with a very large chip on its shoulder. The Quakers always seem to come out on top at the last second when they play Dartmouth, and my hope is that I will finally get to see a Big Green victory in my final year at the College. If you can't be there in person, you should definitely check this game out on television. (Saturday, 12 p.m., NBC Sports Network)
