The Class of 2020 recruiting class hails from across the country and the world, and like several members from the previous freshman class, could easily impact the Ivy League in their first season in Hanover. What follows are short profiles of some of these incoming athletes.

Colleges are notoriously dirty places (in two senses, though in this post I’m really only concerned with the literal dirtiness of Dartmouth). I guess you could say that my fascination with this institution’s stains began in my freshman dorm room. Walking into my luxurious McLaughlin single, I couldn’t help but notice the gigantic red stain on the carpet splayed between my desk and the door. My mind went a million different directions on that one (not really, I just kind of like to think that the College tried to cover up a homicide in my room, but it was probably just a bleach stain). Since then, scoping out stains around campus and speculating about their origins has become a sort of “hobby” of mine.

Sunday night against Colgate University, men’s hockey head coach Bob Gaudet ’81 knew the game would come down to someone making a crucial play. Tim O’Brien ’16 made that play. In double overtime of game three of the best-of-three series against Colgate, O’Brien took a pass from linemate John Ernsting ’19 and proceeded to rifle a shot past Colgate goaltender Charlie Fin.The 4-3 win punched the Big Green’s ticket to an ECAC quarterfinals match-up with Yale University in New Haven. Finn had recently been named the ECAC’s Goalie of the Week after allowing just one goal in two games.

I think I can speak for most college students across the country when I say that home matters. These connections are sure to fall on a spectrum, but these relationships inevitably exist in some form.

Fresh off of a three-game win streak that revitalized optimism for the season, the Dartmouth men’s basketball team collapsed back into the doldrums during this past weekend of action. Thoroughly outplayed by Columbia University (15-6, 4-0) in a 77-60 loss on Friday night, the Big Green (7-11, 1-3) then fell apart and lost a lead down the stretch on Saturday to fall 77-73 to Cornell University (9-9, 2-2), concluding a five-game homestand on a decidedly sour note.

You wonder about us every time you head to Hinman to pick up the basic life necessities you ordered off of Amazon because CVS is basically in a different country. You make uncomfortable eye contact with us while you’re fast-walking towards the tender queso wrap that you’ve been dreaming about since breakfast. You’re dying to know what our job actually consists of, who we are and whether or not we just saw you checking out your reflection in the glass. So today, in an unprecedented step, I will bridge the gap between the mysterious elite glass box-sitters and the general Dartmouth public: I am a Hopkins Center for the Arts gallery attendant and these are my confessions.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Over break, I moved out of my childhood home. I sat in my attic surrounded by boxes, flipping through an old photo album. I was consumed as my mind relocated to the ’90s (the best decade ever), a simpler time when the key to capturing a great photo was to have everyone in the shot shout “CHEEEESE!” in unison. Click. There. Everyone’s pearly whites are showing, and if they aren’t you won’t find out until the film is developed. The color is raw and unfiltered. There is no retouching. Just a moment in history that was happening when someone pulled out their camera and “click” — the moment captured in its essence, we move on and return to these memories at a later time.

My friends often joke that I spend more time socializing in the KAF line than I do actually getting my order. KAF London Fogs are just as addictive as good company, and unfortunately, my friends have a point. With so much to get done, I’ve had to set clear start and end times for socializing. In these first few weeks of winter term, I’ve become increasingly dependent on my phone calendar. In these first few weeks of winter term, I’ve become increasingly dependent on my phone calendar. Previously, it was just a tool to keep track of midterms and vacation days. Now, it’s also littered with lunch and coffee dates. As Dartmouth students, we often feel pressure to balance working hard with playing hard.

The team went on to sweep Princeton University in two games before falling to Colgate in the second round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs. Joanne Hyun ’17 picked up her first violin when she was four years old and has been playing ever since. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Hyun moved to the United States during her sophomore year of high school to attend a boarding school in Troy, New York. Although she found that there were fewer opportunities to take music lessons in high school, she also enjoyed having chance to play more independently.
