A friend recently told me that 75 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot. I, in response, employing many valuable statistics of my own, called her a big stupid liar. She then changed her answer to 72 percent, and we both agreed that this was much more believable.

Tempers have been hot and flaring in Hanover over the past week. Some of that heat will reach Thompson Arena this weekend when the Dartmouth College women's hockey team tackles one of its biggest weekends of the season in hopes of securing home-ice advantage in the hotly-contested ECAC playoff race.

Rebecca Dirksen '00 and Allison Taff '00 come from opposite ends of the country. They have different styles of tennis and they bring different attitudes towards the game. They don't even agree on what clothes to wear in warm weather or who should answer which questions. That seems what you should expect from the tall, blonde girl from California wearing the dress and the talkative, brown-haired Easterner whose long sleeves refuse to admit the sun is shining.

Matt Garvey '99 waits for the police officer to return with the speeding ticket.

Two outs. Runner on second base. Dartmouth trailing 4-3 in the eighth inning, down to its final at-bat. The Big Green batter steps in for the biggest at-bat of the young season and stares down the opposing pitcher, right? Wrong. The batter steps in unable to shake that smile that is as recognizable as the grin on the Mona Lisa.

Under the guidance of interim head coach Kevin Gibson, the Big Green women's golf team journeyed south to Florida for spring break training and then on to Williamsburg, Va., to compete in the William & Mary Invitational tournament held last weekend.

Imagine yourself in the 1920s, dressed in a tuxedo or an elegant gown, lounging in a grand ballroom, a martini dangling from your hand. Couples dance to the swing band, which alternates, cabaret-style, with a jazz band. Worn out from swinging, you and your friends head downtown to the speakeasies to chat over a drink or two.

There's a fungus among us. Or so it appeared in the bathroom mirror. The first red annular blob appeared on my chest a week after I arrived in London. I chalked it up to sensitive skin until a dozen of his spotty friends arrived on my torso a few days later. I squinted at them suspiciously in the mirror, but with classes starting and great London Indian food to be found, I had no time to fret about thirteen little red patches. I gave them the raspberry, but the little red monsters would not be ignored.

The Big Green baseball guide used only two lines to talk about newcomer Mike Conway '99, noting that the transfer from the University of San Diego would "provide depth to the infield."

On the surface, Matchbox 20's debut album "Yourself or Someone Like You" sounds like another Counting Crows/Wallflowers knock-off.

For many incoming freshmen, sports might not be the main reason they chose Dartmouth, but the College offers many ways for athletes and non-athletes alike to enjoy sports.

To everyone, Dartmouth is a place esteemed by its academic excellence. But to those who have ever sported a green and white jersey or been witness to the thrills and triumphs of the Big Green, Dartmouth is truly a place spirited by its love of sport and its pride in athletics.

Dartmouth's 227th Commencement this year may seem tame in comparision to past ceremonies.

Long before taking the field in a Dartmouth uniform, athletes are players in the first game of college sports -- the recruiting game. In a process that has been called "sleazy" and "manipulative" by some and "honorable" by others, coaches struggle to find the most talented candidates and make them a part of the Big Green athletic program.

Her name says it all. Andra "Win"okur. And win she has. All 13 of her squash matches in the regular season, to be exact.

Sports at Dartmouth are not something the average student takes lightly. To be a Big Green athlete means dedication, hard work, and a great deal of sacrifice, and Dartmouth's fans know it. The men and women decked in green and white have historically been some of the proudest and best representatives of the College.

For incoming freshmen, the world of sports may seem out-of-reach, open only to recruited athletes. Getting involved in athletics at Dartmouth, however, may be much easier than expected.
