The Dartmouth ski team began its 2008 season this week in the shadow of last season's championship run. But despite losing some of its biggest names -- perennial podium member Mike Sinnott '07 graduated last spring and Ben True '08 is taking a year off -- the ski team drew on the depth of its roster to win the carnival season opener at Bates College last weekend.

The Dartmouth rugby football club concluded its successful fall campaign with a second-place finish in the Northeast Final Four, clinching one of the two spots from the Northeast for the national tournament to be held in April. In the first game, the ruggers ran all over Brockport 46-7, but in the second game the team lost a tough, physical battle to rival Army 3-16.

Last season, Big Green men's basketball finished the season with a 9-18 overall record, the only Ivy failing to achieve double-digit victories. Combine that with a 4-10 record within the Ivies, ahead of only Princeton (2-12), and it seems like the only way to go this year is up.

When Planet Aid, a national non-profit organization, placed clothing collection boxes in the Upper Valley and Vermont, it didn't expect controversy. But the nationwide non-profit's entrance into the local charity market has been met with antagonism by a local charity, which believes the collection boxes will divert needed resources away from the local area.

We stood in the foyer of Panarchy, staring at a patch of brown water damage on the ceiling. "People think that's where a ghost has been," Panarchy member Caroline Brandt '09 told me. Cocking our heads to the side, we searched for the profile of a face. After rotating a couple of times, I finally saw it; a long nose and an eerily faded eye appeared in the plaster. "It looks like water damage to me," Brandt said.

The HSB festival, funded by venture capitalist and amateur banjo player Warren Hellman, began in 2001 as a strictly bluegrass festival. But because the festival performers represent more diverse musical genres every year, the word "hardly" was added to the title in 2003. This year's lineup included names like John Prine, David Grisman, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Rickey Skaggs, Bruce Hornsby and Emmylou Harris.
