For the third consecutive year, The Dartmouth conducted a survey polling the perspectives and opinions of current first-year students after their first term at Dartmouth. Members of the Class of 2029 were asked to compare their high school and college experiences and share their viewpoints on Dartmouth’s Orientation Week, academics and various aspects of student life.

For most Dartmouth students, balancing academics and extracurriculars is already challenging enough. Still, for Sam Macuga ’23, a U.S. Ski Jumping Team member, “busy” takes on a whole new meaning. Macuga, who grew up in Park City, Utah, is training for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics while pursuing a Dartmouth degree. Her unique ability to manage being both a professional athlete and an Ivy League student has defined her time as an undergraduate.

Students will soon be able to purchase Dartmouth Athletics gear on Main Street, according to athletics director Mike Harrity. Dartmouth Athletics plans to open Dartmouth Authentic, a new apparel store, on Main Street this fall.

For the ninth consecutive year, The Dartmouth surveyed the opinions and experiences of Dartmouth’s graduating class. Since arriving at Dartmouth in 2020, the Class of 2024 has experienced substantial change — witnessing two College presidencies, disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of multiple classmates. The Dartmouth aims to capture our unique graduating class’s final thoughts in this article. The Dartmouth’s survey canvased the following four topics: campus issues, student life, national and local politics and post-graduation plans.

At Dartmouth, some students delay their graduation due to reasons such as COVID-19, complications with their D-Plan, a desire to play an extra season with their sports team or other reasons. Although this decision can be filled with challenges, these students see the extra time in Hanover as worthwhile.

Students were asked to compare their high school and college experiences, as well share their views on Dartmouth’s academics, social scene and campus issues. On June 30, 2021, the NCAA instituted its interim Name, Image and Likeness policy, which allowed college athletes to profit from a brand leveraging their name, image and likeness for marketing and promotion. Since then, hundreds of thousands of NCAA student athletes across the country have signed profitable brand deals, including some student athletes at Dartmouth. While the Ivy League strictly prohibits sports-based scholarships as a member league, they are still forced to comply with the NCAA’s NIL policy.
