After dropping a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker at Yale University on Saturday, the men’s hockey team was eliminated from the Eastern College Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Big Green ended its season 10-18-3, while the Bulldogs avenged last year’s ECAC defeat to Dartmouth and moved on to the quarterfinal round.
At the 2017 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championship last weekend, Dartmouth’s men’s track and field team finished in third with a total of 82 points, and the women’s track and field team finished with 62 points to claim sixth.
With its strongest carnival season in years, Dartmouth’s ski teams are headed to the NCAA Championships.
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s national rankings released on Feb. 21, the women’s tennis team was ranked 20th in the nation, the second highest ranking it has ever achieved. As of the most recent Feb. 28 rankings, the team has since slipped three spots to No. 23. After the women’s team ended the 2012-13 season with a losing record and without an ITA ranking, the team has since gone on a three-year streak of ranking within the top 50 of the ITA.

The new directorate for the Dartmouth Outing Club for the next four terms was announced on Tuesday night via email. The elected members will replace the current directorate in the spring. The voting period for DOC members closed the previous Sunday, Jan. 26.
With spring quickly approaching, Dartmouth softball is out in full force, seeking its third league championship in four years. Last season, the Big Green finished with a 27-15 overall record and a 15-5 record in conference play. While Dartmouth was a favorite to win the league crown, the women lost 8-5 against Harvard University in a winner-take-all Game 2 in the Ivy League’s North Division. Harvard later lost to Princeton University in a best-of-three series.
A 7-21 overall record is likely not what first-year women’s ice hockey head coach Laura Schuler and her team had in mind coming into the team’s 2016-2017 campaign. It became apparent after an 0-5 start, including a 5-1 loss to Harvard University — who finished the season with a 5-19-5 record — that Schuler, the head coach of Canada’s women’s national team, would need time to point Dartmouth in the right direction.
In the past two weeks, both the men’s and women’s squash teams traveled to compete in national championships, and both returned to Hanover with hardware to show for it. The men won the College Squash Association’s Hoehn Cup last weekend, and the women took the Kurtz Cup on Sunday.

In my geography class, we learn that geologists use golden spikes to demarcate the beginning of a new geologic epoch. This is not metaphorical — they literally drive golden spikes into the rock.
Skiing:
In late January, The Dartmouth conducted a survey about attitudes toward and experiences in various communities at Dartmouth. Several interesting results and differences by groups on campus emerged from the survey, yielding new information about student life in the process.
One slalom run encapsulated the Big Green’s outing at Dartmouth’s 111th Winter Carnival. In his second descent on a brisk Saturday afternoon, Brian McLaughlin ’18 came charging down Winslow Ledge. He looked to be headed for a fast time when he stumbled on a section of the course which announcers Brian Francis ’18 and Nolan Kasper ’14 called “Hangman’s Corner.” McLaughlin hiked back to the gate and made it to the bottom, but he had lost seven seconds over his first run and finished in 35th place.
Men's Ice Hockey
This past week, forwards Troy Crema ’17 and Alex Jasiek ’19 received honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference as the Player of the Month and Player of the Week, respectively. Crema’s accolade is the third of his career after earning ECAC Player of the Week honors twice. Jasiek’s award marks the first of his young career with the Green and White. In addition to the ECAC honors, Crema has been selected as a nominee for the 2017 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the nation’s top collegiate men’s ice hockey player.
Both the Dartmouth men and women’s tennis teams look to build on good starts and improve as the season continues. The men’s team experienced ups and downs after stumbling to an early record of 2-4, struggling at times in the face of high pressure situations. On the other hand, the women’s team currently boasts a 5-0 record, a hot start that the women hope to extend.
Squash
While American Idol may have finished its historic run last year, Dartmouth Idol is still going strong. Every year in February, aspiring singers from every class come to Spaulding Auditorium to try and impress the audience with their talent. With this, of course, comes a lucrative promise: the first prize winner will receive $500 and a two-song demo deal. The first and second runner-ups are also awarded cash rewards.
