Back in 2007, when I first heard that Josh Schwartz creator and executive producer of Fox's "The O.C." would be in charge of producing a new television series based on the bestselling "Gossip Girl" teen novels, I was thrilled. Judge me if you will, but I'm not ashamed to say that I read the "Gossip Girl" books throughout my sophomore year of high school. Actually, I am kind of ashamed, but since I'm reviewing "Gossip Girl" and thus admitting I've seen every single episode I don't have much dignity left anyway.

In accordance with the rising numbers of applications Dartmouth has received in recent years, many colleges and universities have seen comparable surges in applicants, causing admission rates to drop, according to media reports. The rapidly increasing pool of college-bound individuals who are applying to the same set of institutions means qualified students face heightened competition for positions at colleges that are not growing fast enough to keep pace. In turn, post-secondary schools have been forced to become increasingly selective when admitting applicants.

Welcome back to campus. We had our work cut out for us last term searching for fashionistas fleeing from the winter weather and hiding their well-dressed-selves in the dregs of the library. With the early burst of beautiful weather that welcomed us back to campus for the first weekend of the term, we can already see the drastic stylistic renaissance overtaking the student body. Boys have thrown their beloved bean boots to the back of their closets in exchange for the long awaited flip flops while girls lounge on the green in their free flowing floral printed sundresses. I believe it's safe to say that after a Winter term plagued by the sweat pant we have finally made it to the promised land: Spring term!

Boy meets girl. While leaving girl's room one night, boy turns her alarm clock to the college radio station, on which he is an early morning DJ. The next morning, when her alarm goes off unexpectedly early, there he is, on the radio, dedicating a song to her: "The One I Love" by R.E.M.

January 26th's Student Assembly meeting which the Assembly debated whether to pass a resolution asking the College to explain publicly why staff have been excluded from the budget committees ("SA debates inquiry of staff input on budget," Jan. 27) made me, for a moment, ashamed to be a Dartmouth student.

Strolling along Webster Avenue last weekend, I thought I had stumbled upon the abandoned set of an archaic, low-budget Western film. After all, with their locked doors and modest cardboard signs that read "For Brothers Only," the fraternities could easily have been mistaken for lifeless one-dimensional facades. In just five quick minutes I was denied entrance into 10 Greek organizations and found myself on the corner of North Main Street gazing dumbly at Baker Tower, transfixed by its neon green glow.

The surprising election of Scott Brown, R-Mass., to the Senate seat vacated by Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., will have significant implications regarding health care policy. Because Senate Democrats no longer have the 60 votes needed to quell a filibuster, the shaken party must reassess its approach. Thoughts about how to proceed have been mixed. While some Democrats have rightly acknowledged that their plans must change, others have refused to accept this fact.

Imagine you're at home on an off-term, taking a break from the Dartmouth scene to try new things and maybe gain a little work experience. Naturally you miss your friends at school and, being that you are home in Boston, you decide to head up to campus for a quick visit just the weekend. The second you step off the coach your Blackberry is immediately bombarded with messages from two '13s you've never met asking to interview you about your personal style. And there's more, they also want to do a photoshoot to capture your fashion sense, but here's the catch, you can only use the clothes you brought for the weekend.

Dartmouth anthropology professor Hoyt Alverson, in an open letter to the College's Board of Trustees and the Dartmouth community on Monday, criticized the College's recent decision to issue bonds in order to finance construction and build a reserve fund. In his letter his third in recent months on budgetary concerns Alverson questioned whether the bonds are the most cost-effective way to build financial security. Alverson said that he calculated the bonds will cost the College about $13 million each year for 30 years. He suggested that the College set aside "a modest amount regularly from endowment growth, over decades" to build a reserve fund, echoing the proposal he made in his April 9 letter. Under this plan, Alverson wrote, the College would receive interest while self-insuring against future risk.
