In many cases, what 2020 took away, 2021 brought back — chaotically. As Dartmouth and the nation slowly emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic under the protection of increasingly widespread vaccines, the community has grappled with the long-term impacts of the “return to normalcy,” from a housing and labor crunch to a new awareness of mental health on campus. Here’s a look back at the stories that shaped the year.
The Korean TV mini-series “Squid Game” seemed to appear out of nowhere, quickly receiving worldwide attention and inciting vast media discourse. Featured on Netflix, “Squid Game” tells the story of a cruel competition for immense wealth — won by playing children’s games with a deadly twist. The show is told through the perspective of player 456, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). Created by South Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk, “Squid Game” tactfully explores class issues and its viewers’ role in them through superb acting and character development that evokes strong emotional responses.
While cases of COVID-19 remain low in Hanover and surrounding communities like Norwich and Lebanon, other towns in New Hampshire — many of which have seen higher rates of vaccine hesitancy and lack mask mandates — have recently experienced spikes in active cases.
Yesterday, Dartmouth announced that the College would be reinstating its indoor masking requirement in light of the Hanover Selectboard’s decision to renew its indoor masking policy on Aug. 4. Interim provost David Kotz and executive vice president Rick Mills also stated in a campus-wide email that the decision was made to “avoid future disruptions” and offer the community “the earliest possible return to normalcy.”

Dartmouth has a love-hate relationship with Greek life. Despite various calls for abolition over the years, Greek life remains one of the most prominent aspects of the Dartmouth social scene. Around 67 percent of eligible students are affiliated, and even unaffiliated students often attend events hosted by Greek organizations. However, with the pandemic putting Greek life temporarily on pause and the rise of the “Abolish Greek Life” movement on other campuses, there is an increased risk that College will use the current circumstances as an excuse to crack down on Greek life once again. It is imperative that this does not happen. Banning Greek life would only make Dartmouth’s social scene more exclusive, dangerous and inaccessible.

This Wednesday marked the 50th Earth Day celebration since the holiday’s founding, and while many planned events had to re-adjust due to the COVID-19 outbreak, student-led environmental groups still found ways to raise awareness.

Women's squash
The women’s basketball team split games this weekend against Columbia University and Cornell University in two hard fought road battles. Despite falling to the Lions 73-63 on Friday, the Big Green ended its six-game losing skid on Saturday with a 67-65 win over the Big Red as Elle Louie ’21 nailed a game-winning jumper with 13 seconds to go.
Men's basketball
The Big Green had a challenging weekend at home against Brown University and Yale University, getting down early in both games and falling short in its comeback attempts. After opening Ivy League play with a win against Harvard University, Dartmouth has now lost its last five conference games, including the last four at home, and eight of its last nine games overall.
At some point, the Dartmouth men’s basketball team is going to have to turn its bursts of success into wins.
