The gentle humming of sewing machines in the parish hall of Hanover's Our Savior Lutheran Church on Monday made the lively chatter of the female volunteers sitting behind them almost inaudible. The senior women, representing both members of the church and the Hanover community at large, congregated in the hall to participate in a 12-hour quilting marathon benefiting Lutheran World Relief Quilting.

Teevens said that the best way for Dartmouth (1-3, 1-1 Ivy) to stop record-setting Yale (4-0, 2-0 Ivy) running back Mike McLeod was to keep the Bulldog offense on the sidelines for as much of the game as possible. Yet, the Bulldogs kept the ball for 38:46 in a 50-10 victory.

Frequenters of Berry Library and passersby may have noticed that Novack Cafe, their source of on-the-run snacks and late-night caffeine fixes, shortened its normal operating hours during the first week of classes. While the library dining spot cut back its hours temporarily due to a soda machine repair and planned hour reductions during interim, Beth Rosenberger, manager of Novack, Homeplate and Cafe North, said she sees no reason that the cafe will not be open consistently in the future.

Daniel Cooperman '72 is set to join Apple Inc. as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary, the company announced Sept. 28. "Daniel is an excellent addition to our team and will fit right into Apple's fast-paced culture," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a press release. Cooperman graduated from Dartmouth summa cum laude with the highest honors in economics. He then attended Stanford University's business and law schools, graduating in 1976. Cooperman has worked with San Francisco -based law firm McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen and the consulting group McKinsey & Company. Most recently, Cooperman served as the senior vice president, general counsel and secretary at the Oracle Corporation.

The Dartmouth College Fund received 40,906 donations, raising $159.1 million -- a record $39.1 million came in the form of unrestricted gifts -- over the course of the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2007. According to Vice President for Development Carrie Pelzel, the high level of participation reflects the ongoing efforts of the Campaign for the Dartmouth Experience, which aims to raise $1.3 billion by December of 2009.

In its 2007-2008 report released this past weekend, the Undergraduate Finance Committee, which distributes $866,000 in student activities fees each year, created a new group to fund large campus events and for the first time allocated money to three other previously unfunded groups. The changes resulted in cuts in funding for the groups UFC traditionally supports.

Yale (11-8, 6-1 Ivy) was recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for its strong tennis with a No. 67 ranking last Tuesday. Going into the match against Dartmouth (8-10, 0-6), Yale had only lost one Ivy League match, against undefeated Ivy champs Penn.

Dartmouth men's basketball team dropped its final two games of the season this weekend. On Friday night, the Big Green's second-half comeback against host Columbia fell short, as the Lions proved victorious, 69-67. In the Saturday night affair, host Cornell's defense was too much for the Big Green to handle, and Dartmouth lost again, 76-53.

To be honest, I missed a lot of the sporting events that happened this weekend. I was told there was this big race in Florida with fast cars, bright stickers and explosions, but every time I tune in for events like this, I have to force myself to change the channel after the fourth John Mellencamp "Our Country" Chevy Silverado commercial. Needless to say, I didn't watch much past lap 12, but I heard it was a real humdinger of a finish.

While the Dartmouth women's swimming and diving team was not in contention for the top spot at the Ivy League Championships, contested at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool, the women ended the season with their best performances of the season. While there were several quality performances by Dartmouth, the depth of the other schools' teams proved to be too much. The Big Green women finished seventh with a total of 634 points.

Dartmouth women's basketball extended its winning streak to six games with a 67-59 win over Yale and a 75-53 romp over Brown this weekend. In addition to its six-game tear, Dartmouth has won 11 of their last 13 games.

The Dartmouth men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27. There were no team scores at this meet, but it was an opportunity for the Big Green athletes to face good competition, improve times and distances and to qualify for championship meets.
