A lot of people have been asking me about what has changed to make the Island become so emotional over the last couple of weeks. The truth of the matter is that nothing has changed. "Love Actually" (2003) and "The Notebook" (2004) are still among my favorite movies, and The Fray's "Over My Head" obviously remains in my "Top 25 Most Played" on iTunes. So when there is a moving story in the world of sports that resonates with me, you bet I'm going to write about it.

In my first Vann Island column in the spring (devoted readers, remember how my column was originally titled Corey's Corner?), I officially jumped ship from the Indianapolis Colts and hopped on the Denver Broncos bandwagon. At the time of the decision (what up, LeBron), I was well aware of the potential of how good an Andrew Luck-led Colts team could be.

Happy New Year! And no, I'm not referring to the new school year that is upon us. I already welcomed you guys back to school last week. Now is not the time to get greedy.
The summer is a time for relaxation, but there's one day that every high schooler fears the day that final report card arrives in the mail. While I'm no longer in high school, I did make some predictions for the summer back in May, and for me, today is judgment day. Here's how I did.
Well guys and girls, this is it the final installment of Vann Island until next September. Hopefully your hearts are still intact after formal season because now is the time to really buckle down. Finals start on Friday, and I advise you to bite the bullet and grind through, knowing that an incredible summer is just a week away.
If you are reading this page, go ahead and pat yourself on the back. Not because you're awesome for reading my column (which you are), but more because it signifies that you survived Green Key. To me, that deserves congratulations. When I woke up on Sunday morning, my mind was conflicted. Reflecting on the weekend brought a smile to my face, but I can't lie and tell you there was not some part of me that was relieved to finally cross the finish line of the marathon known as Green Key.
In my sign-off last week, I made a prediction and a suggestion: I said Matt Kemp would hit his league-leading 15th home run on Mother's Day, and I urged you all to make sure your moms had a card from you to read while they watched him do it.
If you were walking around campus last weekend, you didn't need 20/20 vision to notice that it was an exciting if not somewhat wacky time for our school. The scene signified that 12S is officially in full swing 70 degrees and sunny, dudes running around campus covered in mud, girls flaunting their elegant Derby hats and Collis Ray doing his thing at Pigstick. So with midterms over (for the most part), I hope you were out and about letting off some steam.
Getting injured while playing a sport is never fun. It is especially brutal when you strain your hip flexor in your first ever practice as a collegiate athlete. But that's how my freshman preseason commenced at Dartmouth, which by default put me on the sidelines, where I was able to get a better perspective of what I was getting myself into for the next four years.
Judging by the fact that it's almost halfway through the term and my room is still without a cable box, it's safe to say that my roommates and I will not be investing in DarTV this quarter. That said, we're still human, and I know that for my survival at least, a steady diet of "Mad Men," "Eastbound and Down" and "Parks and Recreation" is necessary. To feed our appetites, we have decided to adopt the growing trend on campus of ditching the cable box in lieu of streaming Netflix, HBO GO and Xfinity from our computers and gaming devices to our TV.
Before I get to this week's topic, I have to take a second to brag about my hometown sports teams. There is no doubt that April is an incredible time for everyone who loves sports, with the Stanley Cup playoffs, the beginning of the MLB season, the NBA playoffs and the NFL Draft on the horizon. That said, it's an especially sweet time to be a Los Angeles sports fan.
I hope you didn't get too comfortable hanging out on "Corey's Corner," because it is now time to get stranded on "Vann Island." Usually your friends give you a nickname, but this one was self-anointed. The birth of Vann Island occurred when I was asked to play cornerback (I came to Dartmouth to play wide receiver) during my sophomore year in a JV contest against Middlebury College.
Welcome to the second ever installment of Corey's Corner. I think this is a good time to set out what I intend to do with this column. I'm writing an opinion column, and, though not without facts, the ultimate conclusions are often my thoughts or feelings, which are based on more than just the stats on the page.
If you were a Harvard fan and I told you there was bigger sports news than Linsanity and the Crimson's first ticket to the Big Dance since 1946, would you believe me? Unlikely, but it is true. While on the surface it may not seem groundbreaking, 2013 basketball prospect Zena Edosomwan's commitment to the Crimson is about to completely change the landscape of Ivy League sports.
