I joined the sports section for all the wrong reasons. During orientation, I figured that I needed to sign up for a campus activity because all of my 'shmob friends were doing it. Even though I had been an athlete in high school, varsity sports felt like far too much of a time commitment. I still retained my passion for watching sports, however, and it made sense to me that my campus activity would provide me a means of doing it.

As a result, you're most likely about to experience what it's like to not be the best at everything for the first time. That's normal, and one of the privileges you have gained by choosing Dartmouth is that you are among so many of the best, some of whom are the best in unconventional ways.

The Women's World Cup was the sporting event of the summer. Fans across the country watched the U.S. national team battle through several tough games including a thrilling win over Brazil on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals and work its way deep into the tournament before losing to Japan in heartbreaking fashion in the championship match.

For many, the relaxed atmosphere of sophomore Summer provides a good opportunity to take one or several of the three physical education courses required to graduate. The warm weather presents ample opportunity for sailing, golfing and other outdoor leisure activities, but those in club boxing choose to knock out this distributive requirement in a much more literal fashion.

The No. 10 Dartmouth women's hockey team lost to No. 6 Boston College, 4-2, on Wednesday, after allowing the Eagles to take control early with three goals in the first period. Wednesday's game marked the third consecutive loss for the Big Green (6-4, 5-3 ECAC) following the team's red-hot 6-1 start.

The Dartmouth football team finished the 2010 season with a winning record, 6-4 overall, on Saturday, soundly defeating the Princeton University Tigers, 31-0. This marks the first time since 1997 that the Big Green recorded a winning season and the first registered shutout in 14 years.

Ethan Shaw '12, Phil Royer '13 and Tom Robbins '11 were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region runners list last Monday. They qualified for the award by finishing in the top 25 of the NCAA Regional Championships meet that took place on Nov. 13. At the meet, Shaw led all members of the Dartmouth squad by finishing in 18th place. Royer and Robbins followed close behind, finishing in 19th and 24th, respectively. Both Shaw and Robbins earned the award last year as well. The team failed to qualify for the National meet, however, as it finished fourth overall at Regionals, and only the top two teams receive an automatic bid.

The Dartmouth football team (4-2, 1-2 Ivy) won its first Ivy League game of the season on Saturday, defeating Columbia University (3-3, 1-2 Ivy) in its Homecoming game, 24-21, despite fumbling three times in the fourth quarter. It is the first time the Big Green has won a conference game on the road in its last 14 tries.

The score remained close the entire game, with Holy Cross leading for the vast majority. Dartmouth took its first lead of the game with 8:36 left to go in the fourth quarter when kicker Foley Schmidt '12 booted a 30-yard field goal to put the Big Green up, 20-19.

Dartmouth graduate and Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Brad Ausmus '91 was named the ninth smartest athlete in sports by SportingNews.com. Sporting News took into account alma mater, SAT scores, athletic prowess and other qualities in the formation of its recent rankings. Ausmus majored in government at Dartmouth and never received less than a B in any of his classes. A seasoned veteran in the Major Leagues, Ausmus has played in one All-Star game and has been awarded three gold gloves. He is third on the career list with 12,828 put-outs and ranks seventh all-time in games played at the catcher position with 1,936. Ausmus is the only Dartmouth graduate to make the list.

With 6,427 fans filling the Memorial Field stands, the Dartmouth football team capitalized on two long fourth-down conversions and a missed Sacred Heart field goal with less than a minute to play to eke out a 21-19 victory in its home opener over the visiting Pioneers on Saturday. One week after the team's 43-20 victory over Bucknell University, Dartmouth is celebrating consecutive games for the first time since 2003.
