Former and current college presidents, administrators, professors and possibly a member of the current Bush administration could make it onto the Board of Trustees' search committee's list for a successor to College President James Wright, who will step down in June 2009. The committee will be announced in early June.

Dartmouth's Board of Trustees has retained the executive search firm Isaacson, Miller to advise the College's presidential search committee in its hunt for the College's next president, according to an e-mail sent to the Dartmouth community by Board Chairman Ed Haldeman '70 and Trustee Al Mulley '70 Wednesday afternoon. The Board first made the announcement at a meeting with the Alumni Council on Saturday, the e-mail said. The firm's founder, John Isaacson '68, will lead the firm's search efforts.

Robert Swantak, a resident of Bradford, Vt., was reported missing Thursday after failing to return from a kayaking trip on the Connecticut River. He is now presumed dead, according to the Valley News. Officers from several Vermont and New Hampshire agencies carried out an unsuccessful, 14-hour search for Swantak on Thursday and Friday.

After three years of planning and two failed attempts, the Upper Valley Haven, a Vermont-based homeless shelter, may finally begin building a new shelter for homeless adults. The Hartford Planning Commission unanimously approved the Haven's plans to build the shelter next to the Haven's current site in White River Junction, Vt., on Monday night.

The Hanover Zoning Board classified the Life Sciences Building as an educational building in October, a ruling that would allow the construction to proceed without a review because the building will be in an institutional zone. The Hanover Planning Board, which examines factors such as the light and noise a building will generate, approved the plan for the center in November.

After suffering a loss of $1.7 million during the first four months of the fiscal year, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center has reduced the amount of money available for staff raises. The cut in funds will force the hospital to tighten its merit-based pay increase system. As a result, some staff members may not receive raises this year.

Three students involved in the Hanover High cheating scandal were charged last week with being accomplices to theft and are scheduled to stand trial Tuesday in the Lebanon District Court. Two of the students had previously been charged with being accomplices to trespassing, while the third had been charged with criminal trespassing.

Eight members of New York City's Stuyvesant High School track team and their coach were taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, one by helicopter, after their van ran into the median on Interstate 91 just south of Hartford, Vt., on Saturday. The group was traveling to Hanover for the Dartmouth Relays, a three-day track event for college and high school students hosted by the College.

Grafton County, like all of New Hampshire, has slightly more registered Republicans than Democrats, according to John Chamberlin, chair of the Grafton County Democratic Committee. While Hanover had approximately three times as many registered Democrats than Republicans during the 2004 Presidential primary, Grafton County as a whole had around 3000 more registered Republicans than Democrats.
