Dartmouth is an easy place to make fun of. It’s an icy tundra, it’s in the boondocks, hours away from a Chipotle (the hallmark of civilization). No one knows how many Dartmouth students it takes to screw in a light bulb because Hanover has no electricity — all the jokes have been made.

Maybe you've known you were going to be a banker since the first time you picked up a Monopoly piece, or maybe you're still trying to figure out whether you'd rather be an art history or econ major. I know my career plans have changed at least four times since I matriculated, and they will probably change again.

My mother likes to tell a story about the time my family went to visit Monticello when I was two years old. After touring Thomas Jefferson's house, my parents decided we would have our lunch on the grounds. The second my parents put me down on the ground I started screaming. Even the addition of a blanket wasn't enough to calm me down from birth, it was clear that I would never be a child of the outdoors.

Take Astro 2 or 3, Classics 4 or Psych 25. If you're like me, take all three. I'm still not sure if I should be embarrassed by this schedule or really proud. More to come on whether I actually make friends or just spend the entire term playing Bubble Spinner and making snarky comments to people I already know.

Shortly after Teresa Sullivan's reinstatement as president of the University of Virginia on June 26, donations to UVA increased significantly, according to The Washington Post. UVA's Board of Trustees previously dismissed Sullivan from her post after she served just two years of her five-year contract. Two anonymous donors each contributed $1 million in addition to another $500,000 in major gifts and $218,911 from 657 online donations after the Board of Trustees reversed its decision. Many online donations were accompanied by comments expressing the donors' appreciation of Sullivan and her reinstatement, according to The Post. Of the online donations, 115 were directed toward the President's Fund for Excellence, a discretionary fund that is used for student life programs and other initiatives. The fund has been previously used to persuade university professors who were offered more lucrative offers from other schools to stay at school, The Post reported.

I was born and raised in New York City, so coming to Hanover for college was a pretty big transition. Here, the air is cleaner, there aren't sirens blaring or cop cars zooming around all the time and there is no need for public transportation. The biggest change, though, was coming to a place with no traffic.

Although many student senates at universities in North Carolina have condemned a referendum on the state legislature's ballot to ban gay marriage and civil unions, institutions of higher learning treat LGBT rights in a variety of ways, as they follow differing regulations to the types of benefits they are allowed to offer their employees' domestic partners, Inside Higher Ed reported. As a private institution, Duke University offers full medical and other benefits to families of LGBT employees, but state universities are forbidden by law to provide their employees' same-sex partners with any medical benefits other than joining campus gyms, Inside Higher Ed reported.

It's week two of Winter term, and you're in the library finishing up your reading for the night. You realize you're hungry, but one look at Accuweather kills any desire you might have had to make the trek to Collis. Instead, you head down to King Arthur Flour, praying that you won't be in line for half an hour. Instead, you find it's pretty empty odd for 6 p.m. on a Tuesday and you make it to the counter in five minutes.
