A weekend win at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Zone I New England Equitation Championships brought the Big Green equestrian team one step closer to the 2014 IHSA National Championships, the first time the team has qualified in its history as a varsity sport. Last weekend’s competition, held at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., matched Dartmouth against teams from Tufts University, Mount Holyoke and the University of Rhode Island. The team earned a spot in the 2014 IHSA National Championships, which will be held May 1-4 in Harrisburg, Pa.

The equestrian team competed in regional championships on Saturday, qualifying four members for the ISHA Zone I New England Championships at Mount Holyoke College this weekend. At a competition at the University of New Hampshire on March 8, the team had already secured the regional title, entering it as a team in the upcoming New England competition.

The men’s lacrosse team lost to Ivy League foe No. 2 Cornell University this Saturday in its 2014 home opener 19-4. The win kept Cornell’s (9-0, 3-0 Ivy) season-opening winning streak alive and dropped the Big Green to 1-5, 0-2 Ivy on the season.

The game marked Bryant's first win against the Big Green (1-4, 0-1 Ivy) and their seventh consecutive win this season. The Big Green began the game strong, peppering Bulldogs senior goalie Megan Hancock with shots, but she was up to task, turning away 10 of the 12 Big Green shots on goal. After a back-and-forth first half, Bryant finally broke through in the 28th minute.

The Dartmouth sailing team began its season this weekend with regattas across New England. Although poor weather conditions in previous weeks made preseason training difficult, the Big Green sailors took advantage of early competition as a chance to pinpoint areas for improvement.

Hana Bowers '13 and her attacking skills have been vital to the women's lacrosse team since her freshman year. In her last year with the Big Green, she plans to continue showcasing her talent and take on the added role of co-captain.

Dartmouth's game against the Quakers began with some back-and-forth action, as neither team gained more than a two-point lead for the majority of the first half. However, Penn was able to pull ahead during the last two minutes of the first half to finish with a 20-16 lead heading into the locker room.

Mitola began at Dartmouth as a point guard, a leadership role almost unheard of for a freshman. Nonetheless, his stats suggest that this decision has boded well for him he already ranks first on the team for assists and playing time, and second for scoring.

Dartmouth's game against Princeton, currently undefeated in the Ivy League, began in a back-and-forth manner, with both teams' scores remaining close for most of the first half. However, a series of baskets by the Tigers in the last two minutes of the first half left Princeton ahead 35-29 heading into the locker room.

Reilly has already achieved impressive results this season in the 60-meter dash, taking first place at the Jay Carisella Invitational and the Dartmouth Relays. He was named Athlete of the Week for his exceptional performance at a tri-meet against Yale University and Columbia University on Jan. 20, where he won the 200-meter dash and 60-meter dash.

Former Dartmouth cross country skiing star Sophie Caldwell '12 has kept herself busy in the months since graduation, competing in races from Utah to the Czech Republic. Skiing professionally comes at a high price, but this week Caldwell received a grant from the Level Field Fund to help finance her future skiing pursuits.

Although the women's basketball team opened its Ivy League Conference season on Saturday with a disappointing loss to Harvard University, the game marked a milestone for forward Lakin Roland '16. With two of the Big Green's players sidelined with injuries, Roland left the bench and scored 13 points a career high. Her stellar performance earned her the honor of Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

Big Green men's and women's swimming and diving had a busy winter break, seeing record-breaking performances in their first two contests. The women defeated the University of Vermont in a home meet on Nov. 28 and then joined the men in the Brown University Invitational in Providence from Nov. 30 to Dec. 1. Both teams then traveled to Florida for a twelve-day training trip to prepare for the rest of their season.
