14W Bucket List

Winter snowstorm Hercules swept in this weekend, just in time to remind everybody returning to campus how cold a Hanover winter can be (like we could forget).

Hate it or love it, we might as well make the best of it — so here’s a winter bucket list we challenge you to complete this term!

1. Sign up for a P.E. class! Sign-up is open until January 16th, but spots are filling up fast.

2. Take a dip in Occom with the polar bear swim! It’s part of the Dartmouth experience, and your excuse is that it’s acceptable to go wild during Winter Carnival (‘14s, I’m looking at you).

3. Hit the slopes at the Dartmouth Skiway. This is one I’m definitely making myself do this term. Snowboarding, anyone?

4. Hike up the Fire Tower. We’ve all heard of it, but does anyone know where it is? I don’t, but I hope you do! (And have access to a personal vehicle because you’re going to need it.) This one’s a definite over sophomore summer, but why not take in the wintery view as well?

5. Get an affogato at Morano Gelato. A scoop of gelato with hot chocolate poured over it is the perfect cure to all your winter blues. Need I say more?

6. Sledding on the golf course. It’s not just for kids.

7. Visit the Shattuck Observatory. There’s something about watching the stars on a crisp, clear winter night. But only on Friday from 8-10 p.m. because that’s when it’s open.

8. Become a part of history and help build the snow sculpture on the Green!

9. Spend some time at Occom Pond. You can rent cross country skis, ice skates and snow shoes from the Dartmouth Outing Club house. I heard there’s free hot chocolate sometimes, too.

10. And…you should probably make it to a hockey game. There’s nothing quite like spending an evening cheering on the Big Green as they take on other teams on the ice.
