Following '15s: Golf champ Charlie Edler
If his successful career at the high school level is any indication, golfer Charlie Edler ’15 of Fair Haven, N.J., has a bright future ahead of him as a member of the Big Green team. Most recently, Edler finished in first place at the 94th Met Junior Championship at the Fairmont Country Club in Chatham, N.J. The tournament consisted of six rounds of match play over the course of three days, with Edler taking the final round by a score of 3 and 2. He also shot a solid 72 at the New Jersey State Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Trump National Golf Club earlier this summer.
Edler defeated Dylan Crowley to win the Met Junior Championship, establishing a three-hole lead after the first eight holes and holding onto his advantage for the remainder of the match. The victory was his first Metropolitan Golf Association title.
Prior to the Met Junior Championship, Edler had already compiled an impressive resume that began with his freshman season. That year, he took home the Monmouth County Championship. As a sophomore, he went all the way, winning the New Jersey State Championship after defeating John Hartman of Seton Hall Prep, the defending champion. He also led Rumson-Fair Haven High School to the Group II team Championship that season.
The following year, Edler set a Monmouth County scoring record after he posted a 67 at the Hominy Hill Golf Course. Later that season, he won the Shore Conference Championship Tournament and took sixth place at the State Championship tourney. This spring, Edler took the Bulldogs to another Group II state championship and again won the Shore Conference title but finished runner-up at the New Jersey State Championship Tournament after falling to his brother John, a sophomore at Rumson-Fair Haven.
Next up for Edler is the U.S. Amateur Golf Association qualifier at the Battleground Country Club in Manalapan, N.J. He will also compete in the Carter Cup at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J. before heading up to Hanover for freshman Fall.
