Dear Class of 2029,
Welcome to the Woods!
Dartmouth is a place like no other. As you navigate your first term, you’ll encounter a set of unwritten yet unmissable “rules” that shape our daily life. This can range from fun Dartmouth slang — blitz, Blobby, Bema — to the best spot for breakfast food. (It’s Collis!) You’ll also soon learn where everyone disappears on Saturday mornings (the Norwich farmer’s market) and where to get the best deli sandwiches if you have a friend with a car. (It’s at Marsh Bros.)
At times, it can seem that none of these so-called rules are more talked about than the Greek system. For many at Dartmouth, fraternities and sororities can be the source of unforgettable memories, of fun Keystone binges and incredible community. This issue is here to give you an honest look at that system. However, we also want to show you the cultural centers that exist outside of it for many other students. You can build a full, vibrant life here outside of a fraternity or sorority.
In this issue, our writers explored the different ways that freshmen connect on campus, the distinct enthusiasm for Pine Park and the fanaticism for First Year Trips. We look at state politics, students who find community in comedy groups and local artists.
As you read, we hope these pieces spark conversations — with your floormates or new friends — and maybe, even with yourself. Take a moment to reflect on all of your hard work. We are so excited to welcome you to Hanover. Bring with you the optimism, quirks and individuality that got you here in the first place.
We loved our first year at Dartmouth. Brace yourselves for the experience of a lifetime, and welcome home.
With love,
Madison, Rohan, Teo
