Letter to the Editor: Between a Bad Parody and a Tantrum

Michael Zenkl criticizes the police response to the May 1 protests one year ago today.

Re: One year since May 1 protests and arrests

Almost exactly one year ago today, President Beilock practically stood on the hallowed grounds of academia and shouted “Get off the grass!” — then followed it up by unleashing a SWAT team on students and elderly professors. On May 1, no less. A day celebrating workers’ rights, turned into a masterclass in overreaction. It wasn’t leadership; it was something between a bad parody and a tantrum. One year later, the grass has grown back, but the reputation? Not so much.
