A former Lehigh University assistant coach will lead the men’s lacrosse team next season.
Brendan Callahan will replace Andy Towers, who told the Valley News he was fired in June. Towers had served five years in the position.
The team has struggled to succeed since it grabbed a share of the Ivy title in 2003 — over the past decade, the team’s record has been 52-86 and 17-43 within the Ivies.
Last season, Lehigh had a 13-5 record and made it to the Patriot League championship game, where it lost the championship against Loyola University.
Callahan has spent the past seven years at Lehigh University, where he has served as the assistant coach, defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator of the men’s lacrosse team, according to a Monday Dartmouth Sports release.
During his time at the university, the team reached its league’s championship game three times in a row and qualified for the NCAA lacrosse tournament in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, the Mountain Hawks were second in the nation for scoring defense and received a fourth place national ranking in the annual Coaches’ Poll.
Before working at Lehigh, Callahan attended Stony Brook University, where he was a top goalie and served as his team’s captain. He also was an All-Rookie Team selection, a member of Second-Team All-American East and a STX/USILA All-American.
Towers had been at Dartmouth since 2004.
