Women's sailing defends national title

For the second straight year, the Dartmouth women's sailing team has earned the crown of national champions. A second-place finish in the semifinals qualified the team for the finals, where Dartmouth won its fourth title.

The team began its competition in Annapolis, Maryland, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy on May 27 in one of the two 14-team semifinals from which the top nine teams advanced to the national finals later in the week. In the semifinal, Dartmouth finished second to Yale University by 23 points despite having the top boat in the A division.

The team eked out a five-point victory in the finals, beating the rival Bulldogs 185-190. Navy, the third-place finisher, finished with 275 points.

Dartmouth's A boat won its division by 41 points. The boat dominatedthe end of the regatta, winning four of the final five A races. The B boat finished in third with a total of 125 points, enough to secure the victory for Dartmouth.

The Big Green had a more comfortable margin of victory last year, when it defeated St. Mary's College of Maryland 203-241.

The coed championships start June 3. Last year, the team came in third.
