Department of Education to visit campus in Title IX investigation

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights seeks to speak to students, faculty, administrators and alumni about issues of sexual assault and sexual harassment at the College later this month.

This campus visit, part of the federal Title IX investigation into the College, will help gather a “range of perspectives on what issues may exist,” according to a statement from the Department of Education. The statement specified that investigators are looking into Dartmouth’s response to sexual harassment and violence complaints as well as possible solutions.

The Department of Education will be on campus from Jan. 27-30, and investigators will return to Hanover in February. The College’s general counsel shared the statement in a campus-wide alert on Monday morning.

The Department of Education initiated an investigation of the College for Title IX violations last May. The inquiry sought to evaluate the College’s response to sexual harassment claims and its grievance procedures. The investigation was not initiated by an individual complaint.

Earlier in May, more than 30 Dartmouth students and alumni filed a Clery Act complaint, alleging sexual assault, gender-based, racial and religious discrimination, hate crimes, bullying and hazing at the College.

The College currently seeks a full-time Title IX coordinator, a position previously folded into the Office of Diversity and Equity.
