Yale deputy provost elected to Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees selected Emily Bakemeier '82, the deputy arts and humanities provost at Yale University, as a new charter trustee on June 7. Bakemeier will replace Marye Anne Fox GR'74, who will step down after serving for two years.Fox, the former chancellor of University of California, San Diego, is leaving for family and health reasons.

Bakemeier served on the search committee that selected president Philip Hanlon, who takes office today, and was the youngest and first female president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council from 1992 to 1993.

Trustee Peter Robinson '79 will retire from the Board as he completes his second term. His place will be filled by Mitchell Kurz '73, who was elected earlier this year.

The Board approved a physical plant for Kappa Delta sorority, which will stand at the end of of Webster Avenue beside Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity and Delta Delta Delta and Epsilon Kappa Theta sororities. Construction for the 23-bed house will begin this September, to be completed by next July.

KD, which currently has a floor in Hitchcock Hall, is the College's newest sorority and the only one without a physical plant. A house for Alpha Phi sorority was completed last fall.

The Board also committed to the construction of an LGBT affinity house. The proposed 25-bed facility will be located at 4 North Park Street, which is currently home to the Whitaker Apartments, a faculty complex. There is no set timeline for construction, but Pam Misener, the former advisor to LGBT students, previously said that the house would be open for use in 2013 or 2014.
