A new initiative this year, Collis After Dark provides alternative social spaces to the Greek system.

"We try to give more opportunities and programs to students to be able to participate in on weekends, primarily Friday and Sunday nights between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.," Brown said.

"Gatsby" is the second successful free movie night this year.

Collis After Dark partners with the Nugget to subsidize 80 student tickets during an opening weekend once per term.

"Zero Dark Thirty" premiered to high student turnout in the winter, with 70 to 75 tickets distributed.

While the free movie nights have been highly successful, Brown said some events have seen zero student participants, and other still have had "flaky" turnouts.

Those with the highest rates of student attendance have been the ones to offer incentives such as trivia nights with prizes or dance parties that provide alcohol to students of age.

Some of the events have been popular with people unaffiliated with Dartmouth.

"We hosted an event called Taste of Vermont' that brought in a good amount of people, but many of them came from outside the College to see the band," Brown said.

Student body president-elect Adrian Ferrari '14 said the Assembly is prepared to support any groups that need help in creating alternative social spaces, pointing to Collis After Dark and Friday Night Rock as strong models.

He said that promoting alternative spaces is of upmost priority for the Assembly.

"We must remember that the Greek scene is not for everyone, but Student Assembly is not going to waste time and resources creating alternative social spaces that aren't as good as the ones that already exist," he said. "Sometimes if there are too many groups or programs, they begin to compete against each other."

Friday Night Rock and Collis After Dark have been successful because they know their audiences and have committed student members, Ferrari said. He noted that increased evening programming is only a short-term solution to creating more sustainable social environments.

Many students were encouraged by the high number of students that attended the "Gatsby" showing at the Nugget.

Anna Driscoll '16 said that while she had been to other events hosted by Collis After Dark, the movie screening had the largest student turnout she had seen.

"In general there are a lot of social alternatives, though it's hard to say that there are that many people who actually go," she said. "The movie showing might be an indication that these alternatives can be really successful if they're events that people are really excited about."

Meghan Hassett '15 said that when she arrived at the Nugget at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, the line had reached Molly's and students behind her were turned away.

She said she appreciated that Collis After Dark provided students with an event after 11 p.m.

"A lot of people were going to see the movie anyway, and this gave them a way to take a night off from the frats," Hassett said.
