Ferrari, Zhu elected to lead Student Assembly

Adrian Ferrari '14 defeating Andres Ramirez '14, Kelly Wood '14 and Janine Leger '15 was elected to be the next student body president on Monday. Ferrari garnered 736 votes, 35 percent of the 2,127 votes cast, according to the Election Planning and Advisory Committee, which announced Ferrari's victory. A total of 1,845 ballots were cast.

Michael Zhu '14, who ran on an unofficial ticket with Wood, defeated Pallavi Kuppa-Apte '14 by 6 votes, earning 776 of the 1,546 votes cast. Kuppa-Apte ran on an unofficial ticket with Ferrari. Last spring, outgoing Student Assembly vice president Julia Danford '13 ran on an unofficial ticket with outgoing student body president Suril Kantaria '13.

The last time tickets were split was in 2005, when Student Assembly vice president Jeffrey Coleman '08 ran on an unofficial ticket with Brian Martin '06 over student body president winner Noah Riner '06.

Low voter turnout and sparse debate attendance marked this year's elections. The 1,845 ballots submitted marked a 394-vote decrease from last year's figure of 2,239 voters. In 2011, 1,665 ballots were cast, a lower voter turnout than in 2008-2010, when between 2,000 and 2,500 students voted. Campaigning began on April 9 at midnight.

Voters could select as many candidates as they wanted for approval voting. All students, including those off-campus, were eligible to vote.

Voting was held from midnight until 8 p.m. on Monday.
