Oberlin College canceled classes and held a day of solidarity on Monday after a robed and hooded figure appeared near the Afrikan Heritage House, The New York Times reported. College security and campus police are currently investigating a recent string of racist and anti-gay messages across Oberlin's campus. Oberlin's Afrikana studies department held a teach-in, which was attended by roughly 300 students. The day's events also included a demonstration, a convocation and meetings held by several campus organizations to respond to recent incidents.
Over 15 percent of female undergraduates at Princeton University reported non-consensual vaginal penetration in an unpublished 2008 survey, The Daily Princetonian reported. The survey was not released to the public, possibly because administrators did not want the results to draw public attention to the university. Surveys published in the 2000s show that roughly 20 percent of all women are raped while in college. The 2008 survey, which consisted of 17 questions, was a version of the "Sexual Experiences Survey" created by University of Arizona professor Mary Koss. The results suggest that the number of cases of sexual misconduct that are reported or adjudicated at Princeton may be significantly lower than the true rate of sexual assault or harassment. Based on the results of the 2008 survey, 12 percent of female undergraduates at Princeton also reported being forced to engage in non-consensual oral sex, The Daily Princetonian reported.
Hanover Police chief Nick Giaccone suffered a stroke last Friday and is currently recovering at Boston's Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, the Valley News reported. Giaccone, who has been a part of the police department for 40 years and police chief since 1994, will be on long-term medical leave. The stroke had little impact on Giaccone's mental capacity, and doctors are optimistic about his recovery. Police captain Frank Moran will serve as acting chief while Giaccone is on leave.
