James Weinstein, director of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and president of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic, was named a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, according to a Monday press release from the institute. Election to the Institute of Medicine "recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and commitment to service," the press release said. Elected individuals also serve on an advisory board and provide analysis and recommendations on a wide variety of health topics. The Institute of Medicine announced a total of 65 new members on Monday, according to the press release.

Yale Law School received a $3 million donation to establish an institute dedicated to researching and promoting the First Amendment, according to the Yale Daily News. The Floyd Abrams Institute, named after the Yale Law alumnus and constitutional lawyer who donated the funds, will provide resources for students and faculty members to study freedom of speech and freedom of press, according to The News. Abrams, a current lawyer at a New York City law firm and member of the Yale Law School Class of 1959, said his donation expresses his hope that the institute will allow citizens to better understand their First Amendment rights. The institute will also fund the expansion of the Media Freedom and Information Access clinic, which helps students gain legal experience with First Amendment issues by taking on actual cases related to freedom of expression and access of information, The News reported.

Cornell University will partner with Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in order to create a new engineering and technology graduate school in New York City, The Cornell Daily Sun reported Tuesday. Technion, an organization that specializes in budding Israeli technology companies, will join in an equal partnership with Cornell, allowing students to receive dual degrees from the two institutions. The partnership is the latest development in a city-sponsored competition between more than 20 universities, which New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he hopes will aid in bringing the city closer to Silicon Valley's level of technology expertise, The Daily Sun reported. The city will provide $100 million to the competition winner to pay for infrastructure as an added incentive. Cornell Provost Kent Fuchs said the Cornell-Technion partnership was not in reaction to the recent partnership between City College of New York and Stanford University, according to The Daily Sun.
