Editors' Note

That mantra may have held true in middle school, but can secrets ever be kept in a place as small as Hanover? Instead, secret societies are a testament to our campus' comfort with "open" secrecy. The societies recognized by the College are technically referred to as "senior" societies, but where's the fun in that?

Jokes aside, we acknowledge that we're tackling a controversial topic with this week's theme. That said, the purpose of The Mirror is to reflect campus culture, and senior societies are no exception. Our goal isn't to expose the secrets behind specific societies, nor is it to ruin the fun for underclassmen. Rather, we've strived to examine the effects of senior societies on Dartmouth culture. When and why did societies come about? How does tapping work? What do students, advisers and tattoo artists think about societies?

We didn't infiltrate society meetings or uncover any secret documents all of the information you'll find in this issue was volunteered to us or is a matter of public record. There are still plenty of secrets left to uncover, but we'll leave you to find those out for yourself.
